You didn't say what brand converter lens you're using. Many are cheap and poorly-made and can cause distortion, chromatic aberration, and other problems and are often quite soft, especially on the edges, as you've found.

Another type is the tele-converter lens that attaches to the end of your lens and increases the effective focal length by some factor. If your camera comes with a 3x zoom lens, a 2x tele-converter will turn your 3x lens into a 6x lens.

An excellent way to increase magnification without having to carry around the extra weight of another bulky lens is to purchase a teleconverter lens.

I found two online retailers (Videofox and 47th St. Photo) that offer wide-angle and/or telephoto converter lenses for my camera. They attach with a powerful magnet. They also offer filters for this camera.

A digital camera that does not take interchangeable lenses (though some take converter lenses). Compact digital cameras range from simple point-and-shoot to ones with advanced settings and manual and semi-automatic control.
