Teleconverters - Are they useful?
Teleconverters - also known as multipliers - are optical devices which when attached to the rear of a lens increase the effective focal length. They typically come in two "flavors", a 1.4x and a 2x - though 1.

There are disadvantages to using teleconverters / extenders. Otherwise professional bird photographers would use them instead of buying expensive 600mm lenses.

4x Teleconverters
An excellent way to increase magnification without having to carry around the extra weight of another bulky lens is to purchase a teleconverter lens.
Not all raw converters are created equal. Some are much better than others. In general, raw converters that run on computers (e.g., Adobe's Camera Raw and Phase One's C1) are superior to in-camera converters. Table 3 shows why.
The most common of them are RAW converters for conversion of RAW files. If you have one of the commercial available image editing packages it most likely already have a RAW converter built in. If not the stand alone versions are good options.
