Here are three photos of a rusty old boat winch on Brighton beach. Having decided to photograph it, I have to decide what I want to say. Basically I want to say 'here's an interesting old bit of metal and it's rusty'.

Cropping: Cropping is a double whammy. First, anytime an image is cropped, pixels are thrown away. Thus, for any given size print, there are fewer pixels (i.e., less data) to spread across the print. This will result in lower image quality.
CROPPING is a necessity if you need to improve yourcomposition or remove a distracting elemnt. However, be careful about removing too much of the original resolution.
Cropping (top) is one way to emphasize the key parts or make it fit a format, perhaps in a magazine layout.
One way to evaluate the tonal range is with a histogram that charts the various levels of brightness in the image.

Cropping images inside of Lightroom seems pretty straightforward, but there is some hidden functionality here that's shouldn't be missed. One of the most important of these is that you can switch between multiple crop overlays.
This cropping factor is often confusingly referred to as a focal length multiplier. This is because the cropping makes, say, a 50mm lens on an APS camera behave rather like a 70mm lens on a 35mm camera.

CROP OR CROPPING: Using the selection tool or crop tool of your image manipulation program to draw a box around a selected portion of your digital image. When you execute the crop your remaining picture contains only what was inside your drawn box.
Note that cropping only produces rectangular-shaped final images.

Rotating and cropping are pretty basic touch ups and you simply have to look for those functions in your photo editing tool.
Quick tip for cropping photographs
One of the best pieces of advice I've been given for cropping photographs of animals that are on the move, is to not crop them too tightly.

Although this cropping may seem extreme, by expanding the negative area out perf-to-perf, Super 35 creates a 2.40:1 aspect ratio with an overall negative area of 240 square millimetres (0.372 sq in), only 9 mm² (0.014 sq in) less than the 1.
For example, readers will likely interpret 'edit' as referring to the activities they do in Photoshop such as cropping and color correction.
They allow more precise cropping without having to move back and forth. There are however, several disadvantage with zooms. One major problem with most zoom lenses is their close focusing ability. This is can be a real problem with wide angle shots.
As if that weren't enough, you can also correct perspective while cropping. First, drag a cropping box over your image approximately where you want it. Then click the Perspective checkbox on the right-hand end of the options bar.
You should make it clear that you don't want advice on cropping or photoshop adjustments, you want to know how you could have taken a better shot underwater.
Dive with photographers better than yourself.
Cropping a 10-Mp image by applying digital zoom could leave you with a 4 or 5 Mp image, which can easily be output at print sizes of up to A4, without any significant loss of detail.
For the web (see the small full frame shot above), the difference doesn't matter, but once you start cropping the image significantly or making large prints, the difference becomes more important.
Cheap lenses, camera shake, bad exposures leading to noisy images and poor camera composition, as well as radical cropping, won't lead you to nirvana.
Whenever you correct perspective, some cropping will be required after the correction has been made. You can do this manually via the Crop Overlay, but Lightroom can actually do it for you while you correct the perspective! ...
Besides, it's something you can do later on your computer (cropping). For all these reasons, you can IGNORE what a camera claims it can do with digital zoom. Digital zoom is BS, plain and simple. It's real-time cropping.
