D-max Techniques Glossary D-max Value used to describe the maximum density in an image.
D-max Maximum density. The greatest density in an image. Also, the greatest density possible for a particular film or paper.
The D-max of the imagery being duplicated is used to determine the required exposure since it reproduces as the D-min in the reproduction.
It delivers a D-max exceeding silver-gelatin prints (greater than 2.4 on glossy and 1.7 on matte) and gamut exceeding all analog color prints. It renders exceptional neutrality and gray balance.
The characteristic curve consists of a toe-film base + fog desity, a straight-line portion, and a shoulder-where density reaches D-Max. It can be looked at as a cross-section of the film, the least exposed is the thinnest, and most the thickest.
Has anyone ever tried to print one of these on Ilfochrome? It might be contrasty, but there is somewhere on the web, instructions on how to use the Tetenal E-6 kit that produces a lower D-max for Scala. So many possibilities and so little money! ...
