The results in decompression of the files can cause "blockiness," the "jaggies," or "pixelization" in certain digital images. The greater the compression levels the more pixelization or "blockiness" that will occur.
Various compression-decompression chips, add-on boards, and software are available in the commercial market. Image compression is made possible because in a typical digitized image, the same information appears several times.
(The compression and decompression when saving and viewing JPG images is automatic for the most part.) ...
