Operation of the shutter some time after the release is depressed. Most shutters have a delayed action timer built in.

The "Black Dial" IIIf synchronizes at only 1/30 sec, but the later "Red Dial" has a more usable 1/50 sec. Some Red Dial IIIf's also have a self timer and are known as IIIf RD DA (for Delayed Action).
