An instrument used to measure the density of film or paper images.

Density
The blackness of an area in a negative or print that determines the amount of light that will pass through it or reflect from it. Sometimes referred to as contrast.
The floating densitometer tool is very useful. This tool has a thumbnail about an inch square.

Films are processed in developers and produce transparent negative or positive images that can be read with a densitometer.

Flash meters are used in flash photography to verify correct exposure. Color meters are used where high fidelity in color reproduction is required. Densitometers are used in photographic reproduction.
