Diffused light

Diffused light from above does not help. There is no contrast between the two front planes. Instead, start the lighting slowly, one light at a time. Here the left-front floodlight starts the lighting. The spotlight from the rear is established.

Diffused Light
One of the main underlying precepts in photography that governs how we take pictures is the ability—or lack of ability—of film or digital sensors to record detail in the highlights and shadows.

Diffused light. Light that has been scattered by reflection or by passing through a translucent material. An even, often shadowless light.

DIFFUSED LIGHT or DIFFUSE LIGHTING - Light that is scattered and spread out as opposed to specular light. Diffused light is softer than direct light, with shadows that are less sharply-defined (lower contrast).

Diffused light comes from a light source that is so large relative to the subject that it illuminates from several directions. On a hazy or overcast day, illumination comes from the entire dome of the sky, not from the brighter, but smaller, sun.

Diffused Lights - Most important and most natural photography lighting techniques are with the use of diffused light systems. For many photo compositions it is necessary to avoid direct light from falling on the subjects or objects.

Soft, diffused light is best for portraits, right? Not always, says New York-based pro Matthew Hanlon. With some subjects, like this boxer, he maintains that the harsher the light, the better the portrait.

I find it very hard to respect a nude photograph of a person smiling or jumping when put in such a serious atmosphere as a white drop with diffused lighting, such as with the photos you posted of the female nude in motion or Â"The Three Graces.

You attach your camera and two diffused light sources (ordinary floods will work fine) set up on either sides to illuminate your subject and remove shadows. Some enlargers can be used as copy stands.

Adding Portable, Handheld Diffused Light
James set up a small LiteDome SoftBox and attached a shoemount flash to it by way of an Adjustable ShoeMount MultiClamp and Adjustable ShoeMount Hardware.

There is an optimum time of day and type of light — I like diffused light. If it’s a clear blue sky I will look for places where the light is reflected or where light is falling through a wood or a forest.

Diffused light occurs when a cloud cover disperses sunlight similar to what a softbox does to a flash head in the studio. It is soft and shadowless, and your subject can be placed anywhere where the background is complementary to the composition.

Soft Lighting - Soft lighting can also be called diffused lighting. All this means is that the lighting used in the photograph (natural or artificial) is not harsh.

This ring flash shines a diffused light all around your subject to allow proper exposure without harsh shadows. So far, I've seen only a few digital cameras, mostly from Nikon and Canon, that have this ring flash.

Very pleasing results can be achieved with a basic set up of one diffused light and a reflector. Diffusion can be created via the use of a soft box, a flash bounced into an umbrella, or a flash bounced off a white ceiling or wall.

The room was filled with diffused light provided by three large windows. I love the warmth of the tiles and light in this portrait. Look down and you may find your next background. This same shot would work with colorful carpet.

I chose to use a softbox to replicate the soft, diffused light that I associate with bars and pubs. You can see my entire lighting set-up below. The perspective is just higher than that of the final image.

Sure, one answer may be to use a ring flash, which attaches to the front of your lens, however, if you prefer to use a diffused lighting setup (like I do) then this is not a viable option.

Result: As expected, primary bounced and diffused light, very pleasing.

A narrow bean of light is an advantage over a diffused light in poor-visibility conditions. Using natural light instead of flash can help to minimise backscatter in the photo.

Plus, the diffused light will cast fewer shadows. If you have to take pictures on a bright sunny day, try to avoid taking pictures in the middle of the day, when the sun will be at its brightest.

Flash - the flash photography technique in which the photographer bounces the intense light from a flash unit off of another surface (e.g. the ceiling, a bounce card, foam core, etc.) in order to illuminate the main subject with a diffused light.

Diffused or indirect light produces softer tones. For dark shadows and high contrast difference between light and dark use direct light. On the other hand, for tones of gray and softer looks use a diffused light.

A huge softbox a long way away from a subject has the same kind of hard light as does a small diffused flash close up. So placing the diffused lightsource close to the subject is important as well.

So, I grabbed a styrofoam takeout tray and cut the bottom out of it; taped the bottom of the tray to the top of my flash and point the flash at the ceiling. The diffused light was perfect to light the players, without blinding them.
