Diffusion condenser enlarger
Photographic enlarger that combines diffuse light with a condenser system, producing more contrast and sharper detail than a diffusion enlarger but less contrast than a condenser enlarger.

DIFFUSION AND SOFTENING FILTERS
You may have wondered what are these filters for and what is the difference between the two.

When a diffusion enlarger is used, negative defects are not recorded as clearly in the print, compared to condenser enlargers. There is an apparent overall "softening" of the image sharpness and a reduction in image contrast.

Diffusion Techniques
Now that we've bashed pop-up flashes, you should know that even the high-grade on-camera flashes have a dirty little secret: they're harsh as well! It's simply the nature of the technology in its current state.

DIFFUSION-CONDENSER ENLARGER - An enlarger that has both a condenser system (for greater contrast) and a diffused light, producing less contrast than a condenser enlarger but more contrast and sharper detail than a diffusion enlarger.

Diffusion dithering
A method of dithering that randomly distributes pixels instead of using a set pattern.

Diffusion - The random distribution of gray tones in an area of an image.
Digitize - To convert analog information, such as a continuous tone image, to a binary form that can be processed by a computer.

Diffusion enlarger
An enlarger that illuminates the negative by scattering light from many angles evenly over the surface of the negative. detail is not as sharp as with a condenser enlarger; negative blemishes are minimized.

diffusion
softening the detail in a print with a diffusion lens/disk or other material that scatters light.

Diffusion, Diffuser
A Translucent material placed in front of a Light to soften Highlights and Shadows, reduce Contrast and increase Beam Angle.

[edit] Diffusion
A diffusion filter (also called a softening filter) softens subjects and generates a dreamy haze (see photon diffusion). This is most often used for portraits.

While diffusion enlargers us a piece of diffusion glass to spread light across a negative (and, therefore, the image from the negative onto the photo paper), the condenser enlarger spreads light through a condenser lens.

RE: Your diffusion filter article (How-To: Effects, March 2006). An easier way to hold the stocking in front of the lens is with an embroidery hoop.

Soft-focus or diffusion filters give a misty quality to images and can impart a romantic mood to scenes.

Nylon Stockings, Diffusion Filters, and Petroleum Jelly
Other methods of producing soft focus effects (such as nylon stockings, diffusion filters, and petroleum jelly) work by disrupting the light before it reaches the lens.

After etching the enlightened parts of the varnish, so called dotants are brought in by diffusion of ion implantation. This modifies the electrical behavior of the silicon.

So the close-up system is easy to use because ao many technical problems don't exist (is backscatter and light diffusion), or are catered for by the sytem (ie focussing and framing) or can easily be predicted (exposure).

For the sake of accuracy we must state that most printers today that claim to be dye sub type printers are actually dye diffusion. The complete technical name for this process is Dye Diffusion Thermal or "D2T" printing.

First, the Sabatier- like border effects are due to chaotic diffusion of reagents in the photographic emulsion and in the overlying processing solutions. Very small changes in initial conditions can cause enormous changes in final results.

For flash diffusion, I have been using various types of paper - lens cleaner, cigarette, writting, napkin, tissue & even colored paper - held over the flash. You can use a single layer or fold it into two or more layers,to desired results.

In addition to having both a removable front diffusion face and a removable interior baffle (made of the same diffusion fabric as the front face), it also has four removable internal panels that are gold on one side and silver on the other.

As I mentioned above, in this case I was able to get the lights to almost perfectly even.

The fluorescent type is referred to as a cold head, or cold light source, or diffusion enlarger (the reason should be pretty obvious). This type is preferred by many, as it gives a softer, often more even illumination.

This is an oversized filter with a gray diffusion substance inside. Rather than pointing your camera at it, you simply hold it over the front of your lens. ExpoDiscs aren't cheap, but the do work well if you have a need for one.

A diffusion type of enlarger. These types of enlarger heads scatter the light more evenly across the surface of the negative.

Soften the light Use a bounce card or diffusion panel in front of your flash to soften its harshness. It will give your pictures a more painterly look. Also, there's no rule that says the flash must stay on the camera.

There are soft focus or diffusion filters which can create a dreamy look much favored by certain photographers.
There are color cast filters which create an overall color cast.
There are color correction filters to correct white balance.

For an even further amount of diffusion, rubber band the material around the lens. Because it is further away from the lens, it will soften it even more.
Open up the lens a half stop from the meter reading, however you acquire it.

There are two types of dithering: pattern and diffusion. Pattern dithering arranges pixels in a rigid pattern. Diffusion dithering applies a random pattern of pixels that adds a subtle grainy texture to the image.

Diffusion can be created via the use of a soft box, a flash bounced into an umbrella, or a flash bounced off a white ceiling or wall.

With 1/4 and 1/2 stop diffusion faces and even a SoftBox Grid available from Photoflex® you can add any combination of accessories to modify your lighting how you see fit. [figures 20 & 21]

Smith-Victor makes a diffusion screen that enlarges the size of the light source. It does so by reducing the influence of the direct light from the small bulb screwed into a reflector.

"Subtle or dramatic, the impact of light on an image completely alters how that image is perceived," asserts Jim Zuckerman, who discusses the qualities of light -direction, diffusion, harshness- and how to use them as creative tools.

There are lots of bounce and diffusion devices available, but these are among the more versatile. You can use it for landscape and portrait mode, as he shows you. He also has a range of sizes, which most do not.

As well as single reflectors, Westcott produces reflector kits which consist of two diffusion panels (frames) and four different slip covers, allowing you to achieve different effects with just one kit.

35mm or digital SLR with PC terminal, 85mm, 135mm or 80-200mm lens, tripod, cable release, diffusion filter for soft focus portraits, flash used off the camera, reflectors, studio flash, back grounds.

-Opal lamp is a filament lamp with an opal glass bulb for optimum diffusion.
-Opalotype is an obsolete printing process in which a carbon-process image is transferred on to translucent opal glass.

The use of umbrellas and various diffusion equipments will help you to pick the harshness of the shadows on your subject. Backgrounds have always played an important role bringing out the details in a portrait photograph.

An effect achieved by diffusing an image either in the camera or printing stage. Can be done with special lenses or by placing diffusion devices or materials between the light source and the light-sensitive material.

A Softbox is a lighting unit that directs the light in a single direction and typically diffuses the light by having fabric or gel diffusion in front of the light fixture.

The photo was made with a short telephoto with a Schneider B+W soft diffusion filter. This shot uses a reflector to balance the image. And reflectors are incredibly important tools to every photographer (people and product photographers alike).

2) Singh-Ray Gold-N-Blue color polarizer; 3) Singh-Ray LB warming polarizer; 4) extreme, solid, neutral-density filter to generate long exposures in midday light; and 5) Cokin Sunsoft filter, which offers slight warming and slight diffusion.

However, while distance data is valuable, it's important to keep in mind that distance data isn't very useful when using a flash in bounce mode or when using any diffusion system in which the light from the flash unit does not travel directly to the ...
