Digital zoom
Cameras with figures in this column have a digital zoom that increases the magnification of the optical lens by the quoted figure.

Digital zoom is a form of false zoom employed in digital cameras as a marketing gimmick. A cropped portion of the image is upsized to the usual image size, and this was presented as a form of "zoom".

Digital zoom its a method of increasing the apparent focal length at which a photographic or video image was produced.

6X digital zoom will only use the information of a 1,600 x 1,200 crop and discard the rest (2,560/1.6=1,600 and 1,920/1.6=1,200).

Techniques Glossary Digital zoom
Cameras with figures in this column have a digital zoom that increases the magnification of the optical lens by the quoted figure.

Digital Zoom
Digital Zoom refers to the technique of zooming in on a subject with a digital camera. When using a digital zoom, the camera doesn't get closer to its subject.

Digital zoom is a method of apparently zooming in by magnifying a part of an image using software. Unlike with optical zoom, no further image data is captured as the camera is digitally zoomed so degradation in quality occurs.

Is digital zoom therefore all bad? No, not at all. It's a feature that you might want in your digital camera (in fact, all digital cameras include some digital zoom, so you can't really avoid it), ...

Digital Zoom
Digital Zoom is a faux telephoto zoom extension in which a digital camera extends the lens's telephoto zoom through increased image size approximation.

Digital Zoom versus Optical Zoom
As compact digital cameras started to become popular several years back, one of the ways manufacturers attempted to differentiate their products was by extending the zoom range.

Digital Zoom
Digital zooms magnify a small area at the center of a digital image. Digital zooms degrade image quality, cause color to fade, and increase digital "noise".

digital zoom
The camera uses software rather than a true optical lens to zoom in on a subject. The camera discards pixels on the edge of the picture and enlarges the center subject area.

Digital Zoom: Non-optical zoom mode used in digital cameras. Results in lower resolution and poorer image quality.
Download: moving of files from one device to another, as when transferring images from camera to computer.

Digital Zoom - A mechanism on most digital cameras that lets the user zoom in on a subject in an image by locking on the center of the image and blowing it up.
Digitizing - Turning other characters into numbers or digits.

Digital Zoom: An electronic enlargement of part of the image making it appear to be closer and bigger, simulating an optical zoom lens at a telephoto setting.

Digital Zoom
Allows the user to zoom in on a subject beyond the range provided by the optical zoom lens. Digital zooming crops the center of the digital picture and resizes the new cropped picture to the size of the selected resolution.

Digital Zoom
Digital Zoom is different from optical zoom, the digital zoom is simply the cropping of the middle of an image to achieve the effect of a zoom.

Digital Zoom
Digital zoom is a feature that is more marketing ploy than anything else! Unlike Optical zoom, which is produced by the lens system physically changing focal length, digital zoom merely crops the image progressively.

Digital Zoom
This is a common term for small video cameras and digital cameras. Digital zoom is electronic zoom where the camera interpolates the sensor readings to simulate a zoom.. Many people consider this to be a poorer quality image.

Digital Zoom and Optical Zoom
Most P&S type digital cameras have both optical zoom and digital zoom. Optical zoom works just like a zoom lens on a film camera. The lens changes focal length and magnification as it is zoomed.

Digital Zoom
A digital magnification of the center 50% of an image. Digital zooms increase the apparent image size by interpolation. They do not increase the amount of image information.
Digitization ...

Digital Zoom - A cropping and interpolation of an image within the camera to get closer to the main subject and mimic a greater zoom without actually gaining any additional image detail.

Digital zoom - Some digicams can zoom in on the centre of an image by expanding it in the camera. The zoomed area appears bigger but contains the same number of pixels, so it will look blocky. Optical zoom is far superior.

DIGITAL ZOOM - Zoom effect in some digital cameras that is not true (optical) zoom, but is instead an enlargement of the information from the center of the CCD or CMOS (image sensor).

Digital zoom - A feature that enlarges the subject within an image to fill more of the frame; using a digital zoom reduces the resolution of an image.

Digital Zoom - A digital magnification of the center 50% of an image. Digital zooms by nature generate less than sharp images because the new "zoomed" image has been interpolated.

Digital Zoom: Enlarges just a portion of the image, and in doing so, you lose image quality because the same amount of digital information is spread over a larger area.

Digital Zoom. A digital magnification of the centre 50% of an image. These give less than sharp images because the new zoomed image has been interpolated.

Digital zoom. A way of simulating actual or optical zoom by magnifying the pixels captured by the sensor. This technique generally produces results inferior to optical zoom. See also optical zoom.

Digital Zoom
This type of zoom magnifies the center part (the middle 50 percent) of an image. Digital zoom works by cropping the image, and then magnifying the results.

Digital Zoom
Rather different from Optical Zoom. With Digital Zoom the image is magnified by spacing out the pixels electronically, ...

Digital Zoom
Unlike an optical zoom, the digital zoom takes the central portion of a digital image and crops into it to achieve the effect of a zoom.

So IGNORE DIGITAL ZOOM. ONLY PAY ATTENTION TO THE OPTICAL ZOOM.
You can see this is a touchy subject for me. I hate to see people say "Oh, 3x optical zoom times 4x digital zoom means this camera has 12x zoom". NO! ...

Digital zoom cameras have built-in lenses such as 10X optical zoom and digital zoom. 2X and 3X are the most common optical zooms. A 3X means three times from the widest to longest setting, for example, 35mm to 105mm.

Digital zoom is just a software enlargement of a portion of an image that you see with the naked eye. When you use digital zoom to enlarge an image, it can turn out pixelated or blurry, and you'll notice a loss of detail.

Digital Zoom
A simulated zoom effect that enlarges the image on a portion of the image sensor.

Digital zoom never brings you closer to the subject of the photograph. When you apply Digital Zoom, the camera crops the entire image, and then digitally enlarges to the size of the display the portion you want to zoom in on.

Digital zoom is typical used after the image has been converted to data to crop it for compositional reasons.
With this format, you can include printing information on your memory card, such as which photos to print and the amount.

Digital zoom picks up where optical zoom leaves off, by stretching your camera's pixels in order to make an image look bigger. The downside to digital zoom is that the farther you zoom in, the blockier and more distorted your image becomes.

Digital Zoom
A "feature" on most digicams which electronically magnifies the centre section of the image. The "zoomed" image is less sharp; I never use this "feature" and I wouldn't pay extra for it on any camera.

A digital zoom just crops the picture tighter, its not a true zoom. If you use this feature you’re pictures will be very grainy and have a lot of digital noise.

Optic and digital zoom
Two important terms used in digital cameras, and you should know the difference. Don't be fooled by the advertisers claiming a lot of zoom on their cameras. Real zoom is only the digital one. Read more here ...

Optical / Digital Zoom Zoom lenses allow you to close in to your subject or pan right out again without you actually having to move and are constructed to allow a continuously variable focal length, without disturbing focus.

Avoid Using Digital Zoom on your Pocket Point-and-Shoot Camera!

These are the optical zoom and digital zoom. The optical zoom works by changing or adjusting the focal length of the lens to magnify the subject.

Watch out for digital zoom. Optical zoom doesn't distort your picture in any way, digital zoom can. Read the fine print.
Different manufacturers will use different types of memory cards. CompactFlash and xD are two popular types.

Digital zoom - With digital zoom, the camera takes pixels from the center of the image sensor and interpolates them to make a full-sized image.

The problem with a digital zoom is that it is not a real zoom. The image is simply being magnified and a section of the image taken out of the middle.

Zooming is another important consideration with digital cameras - there are two kinds of zoom: optical zoom and digital zoom.

The regular zoom range (optical zoom) can be enhanced by the camera's built in software (digital zoom), for a stronger telephoto effect. Digital zoom can be effective, but when taken to extreme the image can take on a "pixilated" appearance.
