Dimmer
An electric or electronic device that can reduce a fixture's brightness, usually with some loss of Color Temperature. Optical dimming mechanisms maintain Color Temperature.

Single coating: dimmer blue or sometimes amber reflections when looking straight into the glass.
Multicoating; much darker reflections of many colors, especially green or dark red. Hint: Multicoated Schneider lenses are usually marked "MC" ...

90mm seems dimmer than the Wisner lenses. The problem is that with a WA lens, the light coming off the ground glass to the eye is going on a straight line from the diaphragm of the lens.

The intensity of the second exposure can be varied by changing the height of the light bulb over the developer solution, by changing the wattage of the light bulb, or best, by using an electric light dimmer.

How will the light meter respond when the ISO changes? The animated light meter below shows the direction of change corresponding to ISO changes.

The reflection is dimmer than the main light, so reflectors are most commonly used as a fill light. An added benefit is that this light can easily have the same white balance as the main light, if desired.

Some fluorescent photographic lights have a built-in dimmer mechanism (the more modern studio lights use DMX, a kind of digital controller system).

The viewfinder will be dimmer and the camera will have a tougher time autofocusing. To get autofocus with a 1.4x teleconverter, you need a lens f/4 or faster. To get autofocus with a 2x, you need a lens f/2.8 or faster.

Because of this, the viewfinder will be slightly dimmer, so use a good focus light if possible.
Many TTL systems will underexpose when doing underwater supermacro photography, so make the appropriate adjustments, or switch to manual strobe power.

Fixed focal length lenses, however, may allow for shooting without flash in dimmer light and may have a slight edge in sharpness. The ratio, or range of the zoom should also be considered.

On continuous lights you can do the same with a dimmer switch. You can have one light illuminate the subject with more intensity than another light. The difference between the two lights is called the lighting ratio.

Up to a certain point, the smaller the hole, the sharper the image, but the dimmer the projected image. Optimally, the size of the aperture should be 1/100 or less of the distance between it and the projected image.

The light from the flash is brightest close by and becomes dimmer further away.
Flash can be bounced to soften its light.
Fill in flash is used to enhance the ambient light, not overpower it.

So whilst an image of a minimally-clad lady may be acceptable to western markets, more conservative cultures may take a dimmer view of it.

From there, it starts to spread out again, becoming larger (and dimmer) the further it travels (my lens geometry description is a bit oversimplified, but but works for illustration purposes).

When using bounce lighting for your photos, keep in mind that the further a camera is away from the central object, the dimmer the resulting image will be. Less light in the finished photo tends to produce softer, potentially weaker images.

This is partly a result of their use of penta mirror's rather than pentaprisms, which tend to produce a dimmer, and - because of size constraints - a smaller viewfinder image.

The push was for higher ISO, so pictures under dimmer lighting were possible as were faster shutter speeds for action. Films were developed and we said, 'Damn the grain, full speed ahead! ...

(they go down in colour temperature as they age or when supplied with lower voltages, such as from a dimmer circuit) Tungsten halogen bulbs ...

You can also work inside close to a big unshaded window which the sun isn't shining into directly. This is dimmer, so you'll need a longer exposure and the tripod later.

To expose film at a higher film speed rating than normal, then to compensate in part for the resulting underexposure by giving greater development than normal. This permits shooting at a dimmer light level, a faster shutter speed, ...

Open flash
Method of flash operation using the following sequence: shutter opened, flash fired, shutter closed. Usually shutter duration is unimportant since the available light is much dimmer than the flash.
Search SWPP and BPPA ...

While this sounds like a wise move it isn't. Powerful pairs are difficult to hold steady and the view is also dimmer. It's far more difficult to view a wobbly and dim object at 16x power than having an 8x power with a bright and steady view .

Have a dimmer switch? Take full advantage of this feature by testing out the light on your subjects. Change the lights from darker to brighter and pay close attention to where the light is hitting in your picture, then adjust accordingly.

may not see it happening, but your camera is always gauging the amount of light available in the scene before it takes a picture. When you press the shutter button, your camera sends this information to the flash, and you get a brighter or dimmer ...

They might be saying that dimmer images (at f22?) cause less dispersion, which is true but has no bearing on resolution in the real world (or underexposed images would be sharper!!). Despite trying my best to understand what they are saying, I can't.

Be prepared to have to almost continuously adjust your lighting so it's in sync with Mother Nature's.' Another tip: It will be much easier to balance the overall light intensity if the existing room lights are on dimmers.

Higher speed film can be very useful when shooting indoors where the light is frequently much dimmer than sunlight. The lower the speed of the film, the finer the grain and the brighter the colors.

This dust scatters some of the light, causing the total intensity of the light to diminish. The more dust, the dimmer the star will appear. It is important to take this effect into account when measuring the apparent brightness of stars.
