DIN - German standards system that expressed a film speed rating by a number followed by a degrees sign ( ). DIN derives its name from the initials of the Deutsche Industrie Normen or Deutsche Industries Norm.

Deutche Industrie Norm (Film speed rating defined by the Deutscher Normenausschuss (German standards organisation).). Numeric rating used to describe emulsion speed for German Made photosensitive materials.
DIN Stands for Deutche Industrie Norm (German Industrial Standard). DIN numbers denoted a film's relative sensitivity to light. Halving or doubling speed is shown by decrease or increase of the DIN number by three.

It is denoted by an ISO number (previously known as ASA and DIN, ISO stands for International Standards Organization). High sensitivity films are called "fast" and low sensitivity films are called "slow.
The prevalent paper formats in Germany are defined by the DIN 476 (DIN is the German Insitute for Standardization, comparable to ANSI in the U.S.A, ISO internationally, etc.). The sequence A of sizes is based on the ratio (Square root of 2) : 1.
In these standards, both arithmetic (ASA) and logarithmic (DIN) speed values are expressed in a single ISO term. For example, a film with a speed of ISO 100/21° would have a speed of ASA 100 or 21 DIN.
Originally, ISO speeds included both the arithmetic ASA value (used in the U.S.) and the logarithmic DIN value used in Europe (ISO 400/33º for Kodak Tri-X, for example), but now they just use the arithmetic value (ISO 400).
EI stands for "exposure index," the first number is the old American ASA or modern international ISO film speed, and the second number is the German DIN film speed. Confusingly, the degree symbol refers to the DIN film speed and not to temperature.
