Disc The term used to describe optical storage media (compact disc). Disk The term used to describe magnetic storage media (floppy disk).

Disc - Typically round optical storage device such as a CD or DVD.
Disk - A physical hard drive on which data is stored. Also referred to as a drive.


Disc initialise / finalise sequence
When a blank CD-R (or a previously finalised CD-R) is inserted the screen will display "NOT INITIALIZED". You must first initialise the CD-R (write basic disc header information).

Disc
The spelling variation of "disk" referring to compact discs such as Photo CD or other CD-ROM.

Blu-ray Disc (BD)
The next generation of optical storage media that uses a blue-violet laser, allowing for a higher density of data on a disc that is the same diameter as CD/DVD.

Since Disc is included, should we also add the current (debatable?) flop APS. I believe it was introduced in May 1996 (could have been June).

FLOPPY DISC DRIVES and CD ROMS are all pretty standardised equipment - most makes will suit.
Sound cards are not necessary, but useful for playing your music CDs while you are waiting for the printer to print your images.

Airy Disc The Airy disc refers to the inner, light circle (surrounded by alternating dark and light diffraction rings) of the diffraction pattern of a point light source.

The CD (compact disc) is a storage medium and does not refer to a specific type of data on that medium: CDs were originally designed for audio recordings, but can store video of any other type of data. They have a maximum capacity of around 800 MB.

CD ROM (Compact Disc)
