Floppy Disk A flexible, thin, 3.5-inch square plastic disk used to store data or images. Not widely used anymore as their storage capacity is limited.

Floppy Disk Adapter - A device that resembles a 3-1/2" floppy diskette and allows a SmartMedia cards or Sony Memory Stick modules to be read in a standard 1.44MB floppy disk drive.

optical disk
Some digital camera models record images directly onto mini-CDs that can be read by a computer's CD-ROM drive. These optical disks offer convenience and huge amounts of memory for little money. Optical disks can not be reused.

scratch disk
When your system does not have enough RAM to perform an operation, Photoshop and ImageReady use a proprietary virtual memory technology, also called scratch disks.

A disk called a Nipkow disk provides an immense number of pinhole apertures and rotates at high speed. The confocal optical system emits pinpoint light and catches that light returning from an object.

Airy disk surrounded by diffraction rings
The actual calculations are somewhat complicated, but the diameter of the Airy disk in millimeters can be approximated by dividing the aperture by 1500.

Floppy disk - doesn't hold much, not very reliable for long-term storage
Hard drive - OK for storage, but your drive will fill up!
Zip Drive - holds a good amount, fairly reliable, disks are expensive ...

Compact disk read-only memory, a system for recording, storing, and retrieving data on a compact disk. This can then be read using an optical drive. A CD-ROM can only be written once. Compare with CD-RW.

A new hard disk drive (1), like an empty file drawer, has no files nor organization. Dividing a hard disk into folders (2) is like dividing a file drawer with hanging folders.

diffusion disk
a flat glass with a pattern of lines or concentric rings that breaks up and scatters light from an enlarger lens; softens detail in a print.

Hard drive /disk
Device for the permanent storage of programs and information that remain after a computer has been turned off.

5in hard disk drive offers maximum storage and the fastest data transfer rates in RAID 0 whilecontinuous data storage is mirroredin RAID 1.

Hard disk - An internal data storage device made of hard aluminium disks coated with iron oxide. Most commonly used inside computers, hard disks have a much larger data capacity for a given price than flash RAM.

Another hard disk consideration is the speed with which the data is accessible. Hard disks are rated by size and rotations per minute (RPM). Hard disks come in three speeds: 5400 RPM, 7200 RPM, and 10,000 RPM.

Mouse (I) Optical Disk Drive (I/O) A small hand-held device used by a computer operator for positioning the cursor, making freehand sketches, or selecting items from menus on a screen.

A type of optical disk capable of storing large amounts of data. CD-ROMs are stamped by the vendor, and once stamped they cannot be erased and filled with new data.

Mostly used for fast disk connections. SCT -- Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope A telescope that uses mirrors and lens to "fold" the light into a smaller tube.

At the beginning of this article, it was mentioned that the optic nerve connects to the eye at the optic disk. There are no photoreceptors at the optic disk. In other words, you have a blind spot in each eye.

The camera has a memory buffer allowing you to capture 20 or more images in rapid sequence, and then it writes them to disk as fast as the card allows.

System Requirements: 386DX or higher processor (486 recommended), 4 megabytes (MB) of memory (8 MB recommended), hard disk space required for upgrade: 35-40 MB, hard disk space required to install on a clean system: 50-55 MB, 3.

Well, it's a very small disk drive rather than solid state memory. It has a rapidly spinning hard disk just like the disk drive in your PC. The only difference is in size.

The photos were recorded as magnetic impulses on a floppy disk. Again, they made use of the CCD technology by using two CCD chips. The first one being storage of luminance information while the second records the chrominance information.

Viewed through the proper filter, the yellow disk of the sun appears to have a dark round "bite" taken out of it. The "bite" is really the impinging disk of the moon.

The filter can be a square or oblong shape mounted in a holder accessory, or, more commonly, a glass or plastic disk with a metal or plastic ring frame, which can be screwed in front of the lens or clipped onto the lens.

SSFDC- This is a type of removable memory card- it stands for Solid State Floppy Disk Card (also known as "Smart Media"). It should be called "Dumb Media" because it is just a memory card with no processor.

What is the quality of JPEG already saved on disk? This small free software applet will estimate the quality of the JPG image.

RAM is considerably faster that disk-based memory and is an important component in computer performance.

An optional cable-free Mac Pro RAID card delivers performance up to 550MB/s and allows the four internal drive bays to be set up in RAID 0, 1, 5, or 0+1 configurations for improved disk performance and redundant data protection.

Card readers are like an external disk drive that will allow you to access the images on your memory card, just as you would with a floppy disk.

At any time, a tile may be in main memory, in the tile cache in RAM, or on disk. Tiles which are currently being worked on are in main memory. Tiles which have been used recently are in RAM.

Actually, the only parts I needed in this kit were the clear self-adhesive Velcro disk that sticks onto the flat surface of any Plexiglas housing and the black holster that affixes the fiber optic.

Light-sensitivity is provided by some kind of sensor, such as a CCD, connected to some digital data storage device such as flash memory or magnetic disk - such as floppy or hard disk drives.

I'm talking about hard disk crashes and virus infections. If your computer is used by all family members, there is a small chance the hard disk may crash due to virus infections (e.g. from surfing the web).

To that end, its American division acquired Digital Audio Disk Corporation from its affiliate CBS/Sony. Sony then purchased CBS Records for $2 billion during 1987.

One such device is Benham's disk. It was invented by a nineteenth-century toymaker who noticed colors in a black-and-white pattern he had mounted on a top. Toy spinning tops with Benham's disks are still available in toy stores.

The Sony Mavica was a video camera that captured still video shots on a two-inch floppy disk. Because the Sony Mavica was actually taking freeze-frame video shots instead of true digital photographs, it can't really be considered a digital camera.
