Barrel distortion
Techniques Glossary Barrel distortion
A lens aberration that causes straight edges to bow outwards, giving a barrel-like appearance.

Distortion causes straight lines to appear curved in photographs. Most lenses are designed to minimise this distortion with any residual distortion being seen as a weakness of the lens.

Barrel distortion is easily noticed when shooting any architecture or any other subject where there are straight lines present ...

Perspective distortion is influenced by only two factors: the distance of the subject matter from the camera and the distance at which the photograph of the subject is viewed.
[edit] Camera to subject distance ...

Artifacts are distortions of an image either produced by the CCD, the optical system or compression algorithms such as JPEG.

The tilt back is used to correct distortion, or perspective, in the vertical plane. When you angle the camera up to photograph a subject, such as a building, the vertical lines on the ground glass appear to converge.

Distortion
Don't confuse an ultra-wide with a fisheye lens. One way to understand the difference is that fisheyes distort all the elements in the image technically, while an ultra-wide when used correctly distorts creatively.

Distortion
There are various lens induced 'distortions' that can effect the photographic image.
(see: Aberration , Barrel distortion & Pincushion effect ) ...

Distortion There are three types of distortion that could affect the shape of the image. Distortion cannot be corrected by stopping down the lens. It can be improved by the optical combination of positive and negative lens elements. Find out more.

DISTORTION - Misrepresentation of proportions of objects or of their arrangement in a scene.

Distortion
Even if the other possible aberrations were totally eliminated, images could result that still have a distorted appearance. For an example, an rectangle may appear as a barrel or pin cushion-shaped object.

Distortion
A defect in an image caused by the lens, such as barreling and pincushioning.

Opaque - not capable of transmitting light ...

distortion
This is common with wide angle lenses, though can also be seen with longer lens. The most common types of image distortions are 'barrel' and 'pincushion'.

Distortion
I keep getting a lot of distortion.. or maybe noise? I'm not sure what to call it. In the darker shadow areas of my images after I do the tone mapping. I'm using the same programs as you.

distortion copy
copy that is intentionally distorted to compensate for the effects of dimensional changes during subsequent processing, such as vacuum forming of a printed plastic sheet.

Distortion
Misrepresentation of an image. Wide angle lenses normally produce more distortion than tele lenses.

Distortion (lens)
An optical aberration of a lens. Extreme example: a fish-eye lens. The term is often misused to describe the exaggerated Perspective effect of any lens when used too close to a subject, resulting in Big-nose-small-ears Syndrome.

Distortion Edit
This is when the lens represents straight lines as bent. This can be often seen in zoom lenses at both ends of the zoom range, straight lines at the edge of the frame will appear slightly curved.

Lens Distortion: An abnormal rendering of lines in an image; most commonly they may appear to be bending inward (pincushion distortion) or outward (barrel distortion). Correctable by using a plug-in in an imaging program.

Barrel Distortion
Image distortion produced when the position of the camera lens is at its widest angle. Lines you expect to appear perpendicular are not.

barrel distortion noun
a type of image distortion in a rectilinear projection where scale increases with increasing distance from the center of the image.

Barrel Distortion - If you take a photo of a seascape with a wide-angle setting and the horizon seems to curve in the image, you've been hit by 'barrel distortion'.

Barrel Distortion - This is distortion caused by the lens, that causes the outer edge of image bow outward.

Barrel Distortion - A common geometric lens distortion causing an acquired image to pucker toward the center and be "rounded" along the outer edges. See examples of it at Andromeda's LensDoc page.

Barrel Distortion
Barrel Distortion is a problem associated with wideangle lenses whereby the image appears distorted outwards.

-Barrel distortion - one of the common lens aberrations, where straight lines at the edge of the field are caused to bend into the shape of a barrel.

Distortions are usually well corrected in fix-focal lenses but they are still a problem with zooms. The table below shows the three types of distortions applied to a rectangle.

Distortion
A lens can exhibit different types of distortion. Most common are barrelling and pincushioning. Barrelling occurs when the edge of an image bows toward the outside of the image.

Distortion
When you look at a photograph taken with a wide angle lens, you'll notice that lines of walls or stairs or anything straight appears to be curved. This is due to the shape and circular nature of lenses.

3) Distortion at minimum.
Transform features five sliders. Distortion offers much stronger adjustment capabilities than its counterpart in Profile. Vertical and Horizontal are used for perspective adjustment.

Lens distortions also can be corrected in Photoshop CS3 with the Lens Correction filter (though not in Camera Raw or Lightroom).

Lens distortion causing straight lines to "barrel" out; the opposite effect is Pincushion Distortion. Fairly common to some extent in cheaper lenses (and some expensive ones).
Bit
Binary Digit; the 0s and 1s on which all digital information is based.

This distortion is caused by the lens. It is fairly common in wide-angle lenses and usually only shows up when the subject is close to the lens.
Although barrel distortion can be visible sometimes, it would not be noticeable for 99% of your pictures.

Barrel distortion, which gives the appearance that buildings lean inward, was caused by use of widest end of zoom lens. Zooming in will minimize or eliminate the effect.
Can be fixed with image editing software.

Optical Distortion: No Lens is perfect (e.g. spherical aberration, chromatic aberration, barrel distortion, pincushion distortion, and diffraction). All lenses have design and material limitations.

3. Worse distortion than most zooms, in part because of the wide range.
4. CHEAP construction.
5. It's not really that wide on your camera. It's equivalent to 45-480mm on 35mm or full-frame cameras.

Parallax Distortion
Twin Lens Reflex camera use two lenses, one for taking the photograph, the other for focusing and viewing.

Pincushion distortion, Pixel, PNG, PPI
Pincushion distortion - a type of lens distortion which causes images to bow inwards on the horizontal and vertical planes.

Wide-angle distortion. A change in perspective caused by using a wide-angle (short-focal-length) lens very close to a subject. Objects appear stretched out or farther apart than they really are.

To obtain near distortion‑free images at closer distances than can be achieved with a standard lens, underwater photographers have a choice of two options, both of which involve changing the characteristics of the lens system.

Automatic Lens Distortion Correction
One of the greatest things about a D-SLR is that it allows you to use various lenses for different effects. However, even expensive interchangeable lenses have imperfections known as optical distortion.

Keystoning - A distortion, typically of a projected image, where the sides of the image appear to narrow at either its top or bottom.
...

Aliasing An image distortion caused by a sampling frequency that is too low in relation to the signal frequency. Where the sampling rate is less than twice the input signal's highest frequency content.

Achromatic Lens An Achromatic lens is a system of lenses joined in order to minimize color and shape distortions (chromatic and spherical aberrations) that are inherent in a single lens system.

As had been mentioned earlier, the DP2 has a great lens with little in the way of aberrations or distortion. Noise is well controlled and colors are smooth. Well done images tend to have a very nice 3-D effect (for lack of a less cheesy term).

For film cameras, now that lenses have been designed that minimize the distortion of different colors of light bending differently, there isn't much of a problem if we use high-quality optics, ...

Such movements allow more depth-of-field, or distortion of image shape.
Chromatic aberration: The inability of a lens to bring light of different colors to a common point of focus.

Strap on a very wide angle lens to create some intriguing distortion and a whole new world of photography will open before your eyes.

For example, optical imperfections within a lens may cause distortions such as barrel distortion or pincushioning.

A word that is often associated with wide angle lenses is “distortion.' It is true that wide angles distort what we see, but that’s not necessarily bad. In fact, it can work to our advantage.

First, if there is any distortion in the image, they results will be affected. Fortunately telephoto lenses don't usually have a lot of distortion.

A moderately wide angle lens gives a certain amount of perspective distortion, the first shot in particular makes her feet look very big in proportion to her head.

Bibble's lens correction tool includes distortion profiles for many manufacturer's cameras and lenses. Cameras and lenses will be added to this list as they become available.
