Dodging and burning are among the oldest and most time honored techniques in the traditional darkroom.
Dodging and burning are terms used in photography for a technique used during the printing process to manipulate the exposure of a selected area(s) on a photographic print, deviating from the rest of the image's exposure.

Dodging. A darkroom term for blocking part of an image as it is exposed, thus lightening its tones. Image editors can simulate this effect by lightening portions of an image using a brush-like tool. Has the opposite effect of burning-in.
