DOF is seen in a photograph where there is an obvious focus area, set against a blured background or foreground.
Good artice of DOF! Interesting read on how you shot the "El Captin". To me it makes a lot of sense on what you did apart from the second to last sentence the hyperfocal distance paragraph.

DOF - Depth of Field
Depth of Field is the technical term for the depth of clear, critical focus in a given picture based upon a given lens length and f-stop setting.

A word of caution. Some use post-processing and apply a Gaussian (or other type of) Blur to achieve a blurred background effect.

To a first approximation, DOF is inversely proportional to format size.
DOF Scales: In years past, many lenses came with DOF scales on the lens (see Figure 2). To set the hyperfocal distance, one simply had to align the infinity symbol with the color coded DOF lines.

In order to accurately shoot for depth of field (DOF), no matter which end of the depth of field 'scale' you want to shoot, requires some knowledge of it. It is the in focus' part of the shot. Shutterbug.
DOF is at best a "fuzzy" concept, depending on subjective judgement of what appears to be sharp. While claculations may give number to 16 decimal places, those numbers are based on "fuzzy" assumptions.
No DOF implications. The "crop factor" is effectively the same as zooming in on the center of the picture.
So, the DOF of a 20mm lens is the same as the DOF of a 200mm lens, given the same f-stop and magnification. Period.
A small DOF is also a common technique for portrait photography. Usually it is quite difficult to find the right balance between people, that are chosen to be the main subject, and their environment.
200mm = small DOF
300mm = smallest DOF
This effect is especially pronounced in macro photography where close proximity to the subject and high focal lengths result in depths of field that are sometimes less than an inch.
Depth of field (DOF) refers to what is and isn't sharp in a picture. Images with great depth of field have a large zone of sharpness, so that everything from just a few feet in front of the camera to infinity will be sharp.

If you press the DOF button at smaller apertures this has obviously also the effect that the image gets darker because less light passes through the aperture.

Making use of the DOF preview can require a bit of getting used to though. When pressing the depth of field preview button, the image will darken (unless of course your selected aperture happens to be the lens's maximum aperture).

APS size sensor is probably the smallest you can go and retain any kind of DOF control. Who wants to shoot a 40mm lens on the 4/3 sensor unless doing portraiture (even then you need a big room to step back for an effective 80mm lens).
For instance, one person may link to depth of field while another refers to it as depth of focus and a third may just put DOF.

Depth of field refers to the range of distance that appears acceptably sharp.
The topic of depth of field (DOF) can be intimidating for many beginning photographers, but the concept is actually very simple. It is the range in a scene, from near to far, that is in sharp focus.

The one conundrum that often arises in flower shots is when we want to obtain a large DOF across a flower/plant but also wish to create that very desirable 'blurred' background as well. ie: a 'separation' effect.

With a 17mm lens at f 22 the DOF is from 1.28 Feet in front of the camera to Infinity, at f4 the DOF is from5.6 Feet to infinity. So you can see Aperture would not make any difference in this case or at least a visible difference.

Focus is critical when working at these magnifications as DOF will only be 1-2 millimeters. A focusing rail really helps as does magnified live view if your camera has it.
