What Do Your Camera's Different Drive Modes Do?
On most cameras, when you press the shutter button, you get one picture. That's usually the default setting, and it does the job for amateur photographers.

 


Drive mode (turn front dial or four-way controller to select mode, left/right to choose between options)

- Single frame advance
- Continuous advance (Hi/Lo)
- Spd.Prty.Cont.Adv. (7 fps mode with AF and AE fixed at start of burst) ...

Single-frame shooting
The camera exposes a single frame each time you press the shutter release.

DRIVE MODE
Obviously use Continuous and fire away. With digital you can do what we couldn't afford in film and just blast away with long sequences.

Drive Mode
One of the functions related to the action of the camera when the shutter is released. It includes sequential shooting and AF sequential shooting. With some camera models, self-timer and auto-bracketing settings are also added.

Drive Mode: Is the drive mode set properly (e.g., single or continuous shooting)?
Auto focus: Is the auto focus set up properly? Is the auto focus switch in the correct position? If auto focus is being used, is the correct auto focus point selected?

Burst or Drive Mode - Many digital cameras have some type of burst or fast-shooting mode to take a series of photos in quick succession. The capability or performance will vary by camera or model. This is referred to as drive mode in SLRs.

Use Bracketing in conjunction with the high speed drive mode.
Whilst 'auto bracketing' remains set (until I cancel it) the camera will cycle through the same three exposure settings so, if my 'drive' is set to single shot, ...

Recommended: SLR camera with continuous drive mode.
Like many subjects in nature, lightning can be extremely unpredictable. Having the right equipment can go a long way toward capturing a successful lightning photograph.

if shooting continuous for action shots (motor drive mode) your camera will slow down when it has reached the limit of the buffer and then it will only go as fast as it can clear the buffer out and write to the card.

To capture characteristic facial expressions or behaviour, choose a shutter speed of at least 1/500sec and set your drive mode to continuous high speed shooting.

Pressing QS again brings up another four settings (image size, image quality, color mode, and drive mode) to chose from. These either choices cannot be user adjusted, but they do cover the most common settings for many photographers.

Many cameras offer auto-bracketing features that , when combined with the camera's burst or drive mode, will automatically shoot a series of bracketed shots.

FEB auto-cancels once you've taken the three photograph sequence and uses whatever drive mode your camera is set to. FEB can be used in conjunction with both flash exposure lock (FEL) and flash exposure compensation (FEC).

Drive mode has been increased from 3 to 4.2 fps. The exposure control range has been stretched from a typical 3 stops to a more pro-level 5 stops.
