Duplicate Layers & Opacity. Perform any contrast changes in a duplicate layer; that way the effect can be fine-tuned later using the opacity slider.
Adjustment Layers. Alternatively, using adjustment layers is an even better solution.

 


Don't duplicate anything top
A common error is to carry any two lenses whose functions duplicate something in the other lens.
If you bring a 17-40mm zoom, then don't bring a 28-105mm zoom because you're duplicating the 28-40mm range.

Finding Duplicate Images On Your Computer
If you're like me, you have heaps of duplicate photos on your computer. Either from making copies of your photo directories, copying from your camera more than once, or even changing the size of the photo.

Duplicate the leaf, make a slight rotation and place it in the background for the leaf on the right. Duplicate these two leaves, make a mirror reflection for the leaves on the left. Don't forget the stem, and place the whole thing upon the strawberry.

Now use Image >> Adjustments >> Invert to convert this black and white layer to a negative. Yes, it will probably look less than appealing at this point, but we're not done yet so bear with me.

Duplicate the original layer and leave it, because we might need it for later. It is a good practice to save the original, and if you don't follow it, you should.

A Duplicate layer is simply a layer that has been created by duplicating another layer.

I took photos on my digital camera of some shoes to share with my friends. I had to seperate files. When I went to burn the photo, all of them came out on the same cd.

Make a duplicate of your file. Open Photomatix and click Generate HDR, selecting both the original and the duplicate, and then click OK. Under Exposure Value Setting, specify any E.V. spacing and click OK.

Once you are happy, duplicate the document. Then work on the colours and levels. This is the opportunity to experiment until you are happy.

You could do this by making two duplicate layers of your image, sharpen the top one and blur the other. By using the eraser tool on selected areas of your top layer you can erase the sharpened parts that need to be soft.

In Photoshop, you can blur the background by creating a duplicate layer of your image. Gaussian blur this layer to taste, then mask it out. Carefully mask in only the background (a Graphics Tablet is a huge help here).
