Each emulsion layer of color film either has an incorporated dye coupler or a dye that is put into the emulsion during processing.
Nearly all other color films have dye couplers incorporated into the three emulsion layers to ensure that the correct dye forms in the correct layer when all three are developed at the same time.
Known logically as "Kodak Black and White" film, this emulsion contains dye couplers balanced to produce a neutral gray or black when printed on conventional color negative papers.
