On-Easel Analyzers An on-easel color analyzer (fig. 12-5) is an electronic photometer used to measure the illumination and three color primaries of light on the baseboard of the enlarger.

Is a compact printing frame which ensures firm contact between the film and paper by excluding air between the surfaces. Some types are used to hold the paper flat on the enlarger baseboard when enlarging.

EASEL - A darkroom device used to hold paper flat while exposing it to light from an enlarger. An easel creates a white border surrounding a print because its "arms" block light from striking the print paper's edges.

Easel: A device that holds a sheet of photo paper flat and properly positioned under an enlarger, or a self standing photo mount or folder.

An easel is used to hold the paper perfectly flat. Some easels are designed with adjustable overlapping flat steel "blades" to crop the image on the paper to the desired size while keeping an unexposed white border about the image.

Place the strip on the printing easel, emulsion side up, in an important area that (hopefully) has both dark shadows and highlight areas. If there doesn't seem to be a good area with both, choose an important shadow.

An enlarger easel on which photographic paper can be accurately and reproducibly positioned is necessary, but most darkrooms are already equipped with such an easel, and so this is usually no problem.

For the painting easel I use bare bulbs-reflectors throw a pattern that varies in color and in level along the edges. And bare bulbs bring out the the texture. If there are problems with spectral highlights, I can deal with it in Photoshop.

In the center of the living room was an easel with a print on it. I asked Turnage what it was doing there and he told me Ansel had a woman come in a few times a week to spot his prints.

Cropping can be done by moving the camera position while viewing a scene, by adjusting the enlarger or easel during printing or by trimming the finished print.

To check your composition while painting, view through a mirror turning your back toward the scene & easel. Shift your eyes back & forth between the painting and scene. Check for skewed elements, alignment, color, etc.

Burning-In:
Basically, a darkroom or image editing process that gives additional exposureto part of the image projected on an enlarger easel to make that area of the print darker.
