Fixed Lens vs Zoom Lens, Which One is Better?
A question most lens buyers face - Should I buy a zoom lens or one or more fixed focal length (prime) lenses?.

Naked lens. Roll your mouse over the image to see how to mount the Expodisc. ...

Fixed Lens has one set focal length with a specific field of view which cannot be changed. Any camera without varifocal option has a fixed focus lens.

Fixed lens camera categories:
Compact camera - this is most point-and-click models on the market today
Compact 'superzoom' - small cameras with big zooms (over 8x) ...

Coated Lens A lens covered with a very thin layer of transparent material that reduces the amount of light reflected by the surface of the lens. A coated lens is faster (transmits more light) than an uncoated lens.

COATED LENS - A lens that has a thin layer of transparent substance applied to its surface to reduce light reflection from the surface.

coated lens
a camera lens that has been coated with an ultra-thin film, usually bluish in color to minimize glare or flare from extraneous lights not a color correction method.

-Coated lens - lens with air-glass surfaces which have been coated with magnesium fluoride to reduce lens flare.

Rotated Lens With Shift
Rotates plane of focus,
maintains field of view
Blue intensity qualitatively represents the degree of image sharpness at a given distance;
light gray line lies along the center of the photograph.

THREADED LENS- Some cameras allow the addition of additional lenses to increase the telephoto range or allow greater magnification for macro work. The most convenient way to add these accessory lenses is by means of a threaded lens.

The Used Lens Option
In addition to the freedom of choice mentioned above, another great option available to large format photographers is to buy previously-owned lenses. There are many sources of excellent used lenses, both classic and modern.

Fixed lens cameras often have great zoom lenses and capture large images
High-end fixed lens cameras usually have a zoom lens and many of the exposure and focus controls found on SLR cameras.

Fixed lens cameras (also known as flatback and wide view or "wide field") are essentially panoramic cameras that have fixed, ...

Eroded lens coatings; while slight erosion won't impact the quality of the picture, severe erosion will impact the pictures and make them appear "blotchy".[3] ...

A fixed lens set at 200mm will automatically have less pin cushion distortion than a zoom lens that covers the range between 70mm to 200mm. Once again, this comes back to the lack of extra moving parts in a fixed focal length the lens.

A fixed lens is simply a lens that is permanently fastened to its camera as opposed to a system camera that allows different lenses to be used on the same camera easily.

The famed lens manufacturer, Carl Zeiss, has published a document (by H. H. Nasse) on Bokeh and it is well worth a read. It's a bit very technical in nature and read like a translated text. If you slosh through it, you may learn something.

Sigma's has been known the world over for their innovative design, ease of use and for the excellent results that their zoom lenses produce - this offering is no exception. The new 70-200mm f2.

Multicoated lens and filter surfaces
It's sometimes said that it's more difficult to clean multicoated lenses and filters than uncoated versions, but that isn't true.

Unlike a fixed lens, a zoom lens has several moveable glass elements inside. By adjusting these elements, the focal length of the lens can be changed.

Lens: 85mm fixed lens at aperture 1.8. Shutter speed doesn't really matter. Just has to be fast enough to avoid camera shake.

You will also need lens cleaning tissue, but again, don't just pick up the first thing you come across. Cheap lens tissue can scratch lenses, so invest in some better quality stuff. For ultimate quality, go with something like Pec-Pads.

5) Attach a reversed lens to an existing lens.
Another old macro trick is to attach a 50mm (normal) lens to the end of another lens, but backwards.

The lens used in a color enlarger must be free of chromatic aberration; that is, it must be a color-corrected lens.

8D AF Nikkor Lens - Nikons ‘nifty 50′ is a much loved lens and similar to the Canon version - for its price and quality it is a must have in your bag.

Cameras come with either a fixed lens or zoom lens with a range of focal lengths (see lens range) and on some SLR and rangefinder cameras the lens detaches so others can be attached to increase versatility.

Many current and recent digital camera lenses, both SLR zooms and fixed lens cameras, have what they refer to as a 'macro' capability. You can shoot very close-up so your (small) subject fills the frame.

Basic compact cameras have a fixed lens that is suitable for most picture-taking situations. However, this limits your ability to shoot close-ups; photos taken closer than 18 to 24 inches will be blurry.

We also discuss composition techniques for taking better photographs. For example, sometimes taking a photo that shows part of a subject makes a more interesting picture than one that includes the full scene.

A dropped lens or camera, even a battery or film canister, high on a cliff, can easily injure or kill someone below. A loose rock or a sharp edge the rope runs over is equally dangerous.

The Pentax 14mm is a wide-angled lens with elegance, simplicity and durability. It provides extraordinary focus as well as high and sharp imagery contrast.

This device allows you to attach these monocular optics (Swarovski brand) to a camera with a threaded lens front, including non-interchangeable-lens compacts and DSLRs (50mm lens preferred).

They deliver stunning sharpness and contrast even at their large maximum apertures ED lenses are in fact so highly color-corrected that the traditional infrared focusing index is not engraved on some of them.

A metering mode in which the photographer sets the desired lens aperture (f-stop) and the camera in turn automatically sets the appropriate shutter speed to match the scene being recorded.

As a first step, we ask everyone to assemble their rigs and conduct two TTL tests--one with the strobe fired directly into a covered lens (causing a full dump) and then one with the strobe fired into an uncovered lens with aperture wide open (causing ...

A: A centering defect originates in a misaligned lens element or lens group. The result is a blurry corner, an off-coplanar projection (symmetrical blur) or object edge shadows.

A macro lens is a highly corrected lens that is designed to focus very close to the subject. Many macro lenses create a life size (1:1) image on the sensor. However, some specialty macro lenses can focus even closer.

The recent trend to deep, scalloped lens hoods (tulip shaped) present a problem with these filters. Because the lens hood is so deep, it's almost impossible to reach the filter ring.

The Canon Rebel Digital looks like it is a lower price with the packaged lens than the Nikon. This is a lower quality lens and should be avoided. Buy the body separately and get the good lens instead. Do not use old film camera lenses.

The quality of panoramic pictures taken with a fixed lens varies widely, depending on the quality of the camera.

Aperture Priority: A mode in which a desired lens opening (f-stop) is manually selected and locked in; the camera then chooses an appropriate shutter speed for proper exposure.

Tamron is optically altering its thriving 35mm-film based lens line to make it 100% compatible with the needs of digital imaging. Other products such as lenses for projectors, CCTV and mobile phones also doing well.

Aspherical lens
A curved lens with a non-spherical surface. Used to decrease aberrations and permit a more compressed lens size.

The main thing about buying any used lens is to make sure the optics are in good condition: no nicks, no scratches, no dust and no fungus.

A fixed lens covers one distance. Some common examples are the 135mm lens, 200mm lens, and 400mm lens. Zoom lens will have a variable focal length and will cover a range of distances. Some common examples are 70-200mm and 80-400mm.

When IS and VR lenses are used on a tripod, lens manufacturers suggest turning the stabilization off with some lenses. This is especially true for the original stabilized lens designs, ...

In addition, a widely opened lens aperture decreases the depths of field, or in simpler words, "a smaller portion of the picture will appear focused".

ED lenses are designed to minimize this problem and reduce the color fringes sometimes seen around photographic subjects.

Focal plane. The surface inside the camera on which a focused lens forms a sharp image.
Focal-plane shutter. A camera mechanism that admits light to expose film by opening a slit just in front of the film (focal) plane.

cropping of the corners of the frame. If unintentional, it is due to a misaligned lens or port.
Viewfinder
There are three main types of viewfinder employed on modern cameras. TTL=Through the Lens. OPT=Optical. EVF=Electronic.

Add-on Lens - Some point and shoot digicams have a filter thread on the front of the fixed lens that will enable the attachment of an additional lens. Usually wide-angle or telephoto.

The largest difference between a compact camera, and a dSLR camera, is that a dSLR can take different lenses, while a compact camera has one attached lens.

Next best, use either specially formulated lens tissue designed for photo equipment, or a well-washed, soft handkerchief or cotton t-shirt.

The twin-lens reflex is bulkier than its single-lens-reflex counterpart, usually had a fixed lens (you couldn't change lenses), and reversed the image in the viewfinder.

Buying an image stabilised lens (and they aren't cheap) can let you hand-hold a photo at 2 or 3 stops slower than usual.
