The Sabatier border line, frequently observed in solarizations, probably owes its appeal to the fact that the viewer is reminded of many beautiful border effects found in nature.
I wanted to obtain edge effects similar to those that Gordon Hutchings describes when using his PMK developer. But, I had doubts about PMK. Pyro is highly toxic, and my skin is sensitive to the Metol in the formulation.

You can see that Fig. 3., while no longer blocky and pixely as Fig. 2., still has no more detail than Fig. 2. In fact, to untrained eyes Fig. 2 probably looks sharper because of all the edge effects of all the big fat pixels.
The bright areas and shadowed areas tend to blend together more easily than in hard light conditions. The transitions between sunlit and shadow tend to be gradual, rather than the knife edge effect often seen in hard light.

Strips of colored or black paper can be attached, out of camera view, to the background paper for edge effects to the glass products.
