Is a Graphic Editor Necessary?
While not every photographer requires imaging software, a graphic editor is a nice addition to a photographer's equipment.
For the Nikon Capture equivalent of the Shadows slider in ACR, we'll need to turn to the LCH Editor. LCH stands for "Luminance, Chroma and Hue.

Nikon Editor - a rudimentary image editor which can be used to change the image colour balance and contrast. Supports basic RAW features such as digital exposure compensation and white balance (single images only, no batch support).
Photo-Editor - This is a program with allows one to make changes to photographs. At the very least, it should allow one to rotate, crop, resize, brighten/darken, and perform red-eye reduction. Most will do much more, but these are the essentials.
Image editor - A computer program that enables you to adjust a photo to improve its appearance.

LCH Editor for adjusting lightness, chroma and hue. The LCH Editor models color using three components: Luminosity (lightness), Chroma (color saturation, or vividness) and Hue; each component has its own edit display.

Aberration
Essentially, anything in an image that is not supposed to be there. For example, optical imperfections within a lens may cause distortions such as barrel distortion or pincushioning.
For an editor of a magazine, books or ads, the square is nice as well. It leaves lots of space to put text in or to crop the image. Of course this doesn't apply to each image!
And it draws more attention than all those rectangular images.
WYSIWYG Editor - This add-on turns the "description" field on the add image page into a WYSIWYG editor, so you can enter links, formatted text, etc.

Some graphic editors tend to strip out EXIF metadata from an image when it's edited. For example, earlier versions of Jasc Paint Shop Pro or Photomatix, are well known culprits.
With an image editor you can make simple adjustments to your photos as cropping (resizing), color and exposure adjustment, red-eye removal and other simple adjustments that can make an otherwise bad photo a winner.
