Effective megapixels
The number of pixels that actually appear in the final image.

16 effective Megapixels
28-140mm equiv lens with sensor-shift image stabilization
2.7 inch LCD with 230,000 dot resolution
720p 30 fps HD video
ISO sensitivity up to 3200
Waterproof to 3m (10 ft)
Shockproof to 1.5m (5 ft)
24 shooting modes ...

The effective megapixels resolution of a digital camera is the number of pixels it uses to capture an image. In general, the more megapixels, the more detailed the image that is captured.

1 effective megapixels, with a pixel size of 8.45 x 8.45µm - 2.4 times larger than the pixels of the DX format image sensor used in the D2X camera. The actual size of the D3’s CMOS sensor is approx. 36.0 x 23.9mm - more than twice as large.

4 effective megapixels and a buffer big enough and frame rate fast enough to rival the D2h (expect D2h prices to fall around the time the D2x reaches market).

6 effective megapixels, this image sensor more accurately produces fine-detailed, gradation-rich images.

Image quality is most often described in terms of how many pixels a photo has. A million pixels is equal to 1 megapixel (MP). Your camera is rated according to its effective megapixels, ...

cameras, especially compact ones, have lenses that are unable to cover the entire sensor area. The difference between actual and effective pixels is usually minimal, i.e., a 5.2-megapixel camera, for example, will provide 5.0 effective megapixels.
