Effective Resolution
Your camera's image sensor contains a limited number of pixels, which is the sensor's overall resolution. The senor uses only some of those pixels to create a digital photo. That is the effective resolution.
The effective resolution is dependent on a number of factors. AA filter of the sensor, A/D conversion, demosaicing, base sharpening and of course the lens resolution. However, the "front-"factors are all near-linear. Say, e.g.
