Enlarging Paper: Photographic printing paper for making enlargements from negatives. Has faster emulsion speed than (more light sensitive) than contact paper.

enlarging
refer to enlargement and blow-up.
englobe
a slip or liquid clay used for decorating.

Enlarging easel (masking frame). Flat board with adjustable flaps used on the enlarger base board to hold paper flat during exposure.

Enlarging a digital image or examining it from close by will reveal visible steps in diagonal lines in an image. Since pixels are square in layout every diagonal line has to be built up by square blocks of color stepped on top of one another.

Step 1: Duplicate the Photo
The first and very critical step in this process is to backup your original photo. If you make a mistake in the process, at least you have a backup.

Enlarging digital images is usually avoided because the results are not that good. However, there are now programs available that do a very good job at this single task.

Enlarging Digital Images for Publication
Can images from a 6Mpixel camera meet standards of publishers for digital image submission?

Enlarging the images begins to tell a different story. Figure 3 is a crop (at two times magnification) of a section from Figure 1 (raw workflow). Figure 4 is a crop (also at two times magnification) of a section from Figure 2 (JPEG workflow).

Enlarging the image digitally reduces picture quality, and should therefore usually be avoided. However, a judicious use of digital zoom may sometimes yield images that are of quite acceptable quality. So, use with caution.

Zooming
Enlarging a portion of an image in order to see it more clearly or make it easier to alter. Opposite of zoom-out, which is useful for viewing the entire image when the full image is larger than the display space.

The process of enlarging an image in one or more directions.
scan line
A row of pixels. The term comes from the scanning action of raster CRT output devices, which produces successive lines of output on the display surface.

When it comes to enlarging pictures, photo editing programs do not have a very good track record. Shrinking a picture works very well, but enlarging is a lot more difficult--because you can't just make the dots bigger.

Like all image-forming equipment, the lens is an integral part of the enlarging system. The lens used in a color enlarger must be free of chromatic aberration; that is, it must be a color-corrected lens.

16th century: Brightness and clarity of camera obscuras improved by enlarging the hole inserting a telescope lens

For example if we are enlarging a 35mm negative (24mm x 36mm) to an 8" x 12" print we have to magnify it by a factor of 8.46. So the size on the negative that would give a 250 micron spot on the print is 250/8.46 microns, or 29.5 microns.

Obvious variables in this method are the kind of enlarging paper, the composition and concentration of the developer, the first and second development times, the second exposure time, and the intensity of the second exposure.

The set of photographs taken a few days after the accident have been re-analysed in 1999-2000 by digitising them and enlarging the files to show critical details.

The problem with this is that enlarging the picture also enlarges the grain in the case of film and lowers the apparent resolution in the case of digital.

As a result of the new strategy Nikon will discontinue production of all lenses for large format cameras and enlarging lenses with sales of these products ceasing as soon as they run out of stock.

-Stop - aperture of a camera or enlarging lens.
-Stop bath - chemical bath whose purpose is to stop development by neutralizing unwanted developer.

RAW allows you to enlarge digital images to a larger size with higher quality when done in the RAW converter than if you enlarge them later in Photoshop or using most other enlarging software.

What the OPTICAL zoom tells you is how good the lens is at enlarging the center of the image, making a small area look real big, helping to make far-away things look closer.

An adjustable frame that's also known as an enlarging easel. It holds printing paper under enlarger during exposure and can be set to cover the edges to form an even white border.

reducing the size of the lens aperture and thus the amount of light passing into the camera. It increases depth of field.

An enlargement of a picture; or the process of enlarging a picture (to blow up).

A photographic effect, either intentional or unintentional, that produces an picture with a loss of image sharpness.

On the other hand, the digital zoom works by simply enlarging the image, which is similar to the zoom found in most programs for image editing.

-Carrier - frame that holds a negative flat for enlarging.
-Carte-de-visite - portrait photograph on a mount about the size of a postcard. Introduced in 1854, carte-de-visite became a social craze in many countries during the 1860s.

Some people have forced a #2370 to work, gluing things together after enlarging the hole using a wooden dowel wrapped in sand paper or other means. I have also seen a badly translated webpage from is a company in Japan called IRCUBE Co. Ltd.

High-resolution photos take up more storage space, but the extra information present in these photos produces better results when printing or enlarging. If they will only be displayed on a monitor screen, this extra detail is usually unnecessary.

I always take my black and white enlarging jobs to Abbott and Tincombe. I find their staff very helpful and friendly.

The quantity of light allowed to act on a photographic material; a product of the intensity (controlled by the lens opening) and the duration (controlled by the shutter speed or enlarging time) of light striking the film or paper.

If the image has a relatively low resolution, then enlarging it will decrease the resolution further, causing the enlargement to be more blurry and grainier.

Emulsion Side The side of the film coated with emulsion. In contact printing and enlarging, the emulsion side of the film-dull side-should face the emulsion side of the photo paper-shiny side.

If you were shooting negative film, you had a bit of latitude enlarging the negative, but there were limitations. Slide shooters could make a cropped dupe, but the results were marginal at best.

This is really because of the enlarging process. To get an idea of what normal is, a 35mm negative with a normal contrast range and correct exposure, enlarged to 8 × 10, should take around 8-10 seconds at ƒ/8. Around.

This results in a loss of quality, and is no different than cropping and enlarging an image with any commercially available editing software. When you use digital zoom on the camera, the image quality is irreversibly lost.

Digital tele
Thanks to special algorithms, some digital cameras are able to provide a zoom effect by re-calculating the captured image data. However, enlarging an image in this way also means reducing its picture quality.

Crop bad because it means the sensor is physically smaller, that means either less megapixels or higher pixel density, which can lead to noise when enlarging.

However there is a trade-off, because the higher the ISO the more grain you will have in your picture. I would set your ISO to at least 400, and no higher than 800. If you aren't enlarging the pictures, 800 should be fine.
