Enlarging a digital image or examining it from close by will reveal visible steps in diagonal lines in an image. Since pixels are square in layout every diagonal line has to be built up by square blocks of color stepped on top of one another.

Enlarging digital images is usually avoided because the results are not that good. However, there are now programs available that do a very good job at this single task.

Enlarging the images begins to tell a different story. Figure 3 is a crop (at two times magnification) of a section from Figure 1 (raw workflow). Figure 4 is a crop (also at two times magnification) of a section from Figure 2 (JPEG workflow).
Enlarging the image digitally reduces picture quality, and should therefore usually be avoided. However, a judicious use of digital zoom may sometimes yield images that are of quite acceptable quality. So, use with caution.

For example if we are enlarging a 35mm negative (24mm x 36mm) to an 8" x 12" print we have to magnify it by a factor of 8.46. So the size on the negative that would give a 250 micron spot on the print is 250/8.46 microns, or 29.5 microns.
