EXISTING LIGHT Existing light photography, sometimes called available or natural light photography, is the making of pictures by the light that happens to be on the scene.

Existing Light Available light. Strictly speaking, existing light covers all natural lighting from moonlight to sunshine.

Existing Light Light that exists naturally at the scene. Also known as available light, it's often taken to mean only daylight, but many photographers consider it any light or light source that happens to be at the scene.

EXISTING LIGHT - The light that is naturally illuminating a scene without any additional light that has been added by the photographer. Ambient light and available light are two other terms that mean the same thing.

Available light, includes all natural lighting from moonlight to sunshine; and for photographic purposes, existing light is also the light that is already on the scene.

Existing light. In photography, the illumination that is already present in a scene.

Natural/Existing light vs. flash: Use Natural Light instead of flash whenever possible. Shoot outside or near bright window light. Your pictures will look more natural.

Exposure - The amount of light that acts upon photographic material and which is a function of light intensity (lens opening) and duration (shutter speed).

Amplifying Existing Light
Images can be captured in low light, but not total darkness, using an image intensifier, a device also found in night vision goggles and night scopes.

This is the existing light found in a scene before the photographer introduces additional lights. Also referred to as available light.

Fill Flash is used to supplement existing light in a scene - it's generally not the primary light source (as a flash often is at night) but fills in light where natural light doesn't go.

Digital cameras enable you to adjust the camera's sensitivity to the existing light.

You can use strobes in a room that has existing light; the room light will be so much less than the light from the strobes (if your have reasonably powerful strobes) that the room light won't affect your shot.

If your flash completely overpowers the existing light, the photo may be dramatic, but the shadows may be too dark and the background may be black.

Where a room has a well-designed artificial lighting system, a commercial architectural photographer will often use the existing lights and fixtures to balance the natural light.

Existing Light: Any available light regardless of time of day and at any location.
Fill Flash: A technique to brighten dark shadow areas, often used when the subject is located in the dark shadow.

Many cameras have a fill-in mode and this will take into account the existing light so you get a perfect daylight exposure and enough flash to fill in the shadows. Just do a test with default settings and check out the result.

Whether it's a smoke-filled dimly-lit club or a stage with bright spotlights and colored gels, I prefer to use the existing lighting, or what photographers call available light.

By adjusting the aperture, you can widen the lens opening to let more light in at one time into the camera, thereby taking more of the existing light in than you would otherwise.

How-To: Shooting in Existing Light

AE - Auto Exposure, a system for automatically setting the proper exposure according to the existing light conditions. There are three types of AE systems:

Gathers the existing light and softly fills in shadows to light your subject. Great for brides because they don't alter the white of the dress.
Blue - Cool tones.
Silver - Neutral in colour although brighter than white.

For lower light scenarios, 1/30 is very good as it allows more existing light to be recorded whether you are shooting digital or film. Also, with the longer shutter speed it can allow for the flash to be more effective.

It is used when the shutter speed is not important because of poor existing light.
Optical axis: Imaginary line passing horizontally through the center of a lens.
Overdevelopment: Excessive development, producing dense, high contrast negatives.

As an example on the other end of the graph, if your image does not contain clouds or any other components that should be close to pure white, there is no reason to remap the existing lightest pixels all the way to 255 or white.

Then I also shoot the subject without the flash just using existing lighting. That allows me choose the best exposure when I am editing the photos. Very often I will choose the photo without the fill flash.
Don't avoid backlit subjects.

Increase your ISO, turn on your camera's anti-shake, and do the best you can with the existing light. If it's still too dark and you're getting shaky shots, then you probably won't be able to take pictures in that situation.

And there's the light from the flash unit, which is supplementing this existing light. As always, ambient light levels hitting the film or sensor are governed by the lens aperture and shutter speed and flash levels are governed by flash metering.

He wanted its broad, bright output to suggest that the dancers were backlit by the existing lights mounted underneath the bridge that formed the proscenium of this theatrical space.

Metering. Metering is used to calculate the exposure from the existing light conditions. Includes Matrix Metering, Spot metering and Center-weighted metering.

If you want to take pictures indoors where light may not be sufficient and in other low-light situations, then you would need to supplement existing light with flash or studio lights. Either that, or select a higher ISO.

When you're outside in dim light using a slow shutter speed to capture of a subject out of your flash range, turn off your flash and capture the scene in the existing light. Use a tripod and be sure to use high-speed film if you have a film camera.
