Exposure is one of the most basic of photographic skills. Proper exposure allows the photographer to maximize the quality of the image and to determine where detail will appear in an image.

Unsurprisingly, exposure simply means allowing light to strike your film.
Exposure compensation lets you lighten or darken the photograph that the camera would produce if operated automatically. To lighten a picture, you increase the exposure; to darken one, you decrease the exposure.

Auto Exposure Bracketing is usually a good way to capture the full dynamic range. Most cameras can capture 3 shots at +/-2 EV intervals, which is a good exposure range for many typical scenes.
Long exposure times may also allow you to roll-back the ISO to a lower number. Lower ISO numbers result in higher resolution and less "noise"; all necessary for sharp, clear night-time photos! ...
Proper exposure is created by using various combinations of film speed, shutter speed, and aperture. The photographer then checks the light meter to confirm that these combinations will result in the desired light reaching the film or sensor.
Double exposures are not the limit, as multiple exposures are possible, but the photographer should try not to overexpose the film.
Set a +1 exposure compensation level. Take the same photos again. The new images will be brighter, hopefully close to perfect. That makes sense because the + exposure compensation level causes the camera to make a photo with more exposure.
EXIF and exposure info as follows: spot meter mode, aperture priority auto exposure, ISO 400, 1/320 sec, f8, one shot AF with central spot, 100-400 Canon @ 400mm.

With overexposure, highlights are blown out and render no detail. Once this detail is lost, no Photoshop tool can reinvent the missing information. Underexposure is a more subtle problem.
The majority of my landscape work is shot in low light where the land and sky exposures differ greatly. I bridge this exposure gap with graduate filters.
If film - all regular film - is formulated to produce the best exposure when it is exposed to 18% gray light, why not read the light itself?
In summary, the myth is incorrect, it's not about exposure. If you want exposure, just walk out your front door, stand in the middle of the street and drop your trousers. hehe.
