The Extensible Metadata Platform or XMP is a specific type of extensible markup language used in PDF, photography and photo editing applications. It was first introduced by Adobe Systems in April 2001 as part of version 5.
XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) Developed by Adobe Systems, the Extensible Metadata Platform is an open standard for processing and safely embedding metadata in a wide range of file formats.
These are small text files written in an open XML-based standard called XMP (eXtensible Metadata Platform). The files are saved in the same directory and with the same name as each edited image, but with the .xmp suffix.

If you wish the metadata changes to be written to XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) then go to Edit > Catalog Settings and select Automatically Write Changes Into XMP. This way the changes made in Lightroom will be recognized by other applications.
