Ferrotype Process
The Ferrotype Process, also known as "tintype" or "melainotype" process, refers to the photographic process of reproducing images on iron ("ferro") or tin.

 


ferrotype plate
a chrome plated or black enameled sheet of steel or mirror plated glass used to dry photographic prints to a high gloss finish.
ferrule
the metal band of a brush.

Ferrotype process - method of creating direct positive images with dark enameled metal plates as a base. Also known as the tin-type process.

1855-57: Direct positive images on glass (ambrotypes) and metal (tintypes or ferrotypes) popular in the US.

The negatives printed easily, using a condenser-type enlarger. Our prints were mostly 8X10s, primarily used for publication purposes. They were made on single weight graded fiber base paper, ferrotyped to give them a high gloss surface.
