A camera won't do you much good unless you can buy film in the right size for it. Companies like Fuji and Kodak will generally make the same emulsion (film formulation) in a variety of sizes.

Scanning film is better than scanning prints, because when scanning the film you're using the original image, but when scanning the print you get a second generation copy.

Obviously, then, film does not dry uniformly. When gelatin dries, the water it contains must first migrate to the surface and then evaporate into the air. Ideally, these processes should take place simultaneously and at the same rate.

Each type of film has its own color profile and if the operator does not set the machine for the right brand and type of film your blues may come out orange.

Film Speed measures the degree to which film is sensitive to light. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or the American Standards Association (ASA) are both responsible for setting the ranges of film speed.

A film scan is a second generation image. The first generation is camera lens to film and the second generation is film to scanner CCD. Digital camera images are first generation with the camera lens producing the final image.

With film--or in my case chromes--once the shooting was done for the day and my gear cleaned there was ample free time to get to know my surroundings a little better. Even more importantly, I had a chance to meet the locals and get to know them.

Each film cassette that slips into a camera contains all the things that would normally be in a darkroom: photographic paper, a negative, and a substance to fix the image and one to stop the photo from developing further.

Slide Film
Advantages: Ease of cataloging. With slide film you view the finished film, even though it is generally delivered in 2x2 inch mounts. After pitching the bad ones, the keepers can be placed in archival slide pages and three-ring binders.

Colour negative film is available in speeds from 100ASA to 1600ASA. It has a very much greater latitude than either black & white negative or colour reveral film, about 5 stops.

ISO stands for International Standards Organization and numbers such as ISO 100 or ISO 400 etc. give the sensitivity of film to light. The higher the number, the more sensitive or faster the film.

Film speed

What's your preferred film? Most photographers have a favorite brand/speed, etc. Whatever yours is, buy lots of it. More than you think that you will ever need.

Film cameras force you to be more careful about what you are taking. Even a millionaire would be reluctant to sit around on his yacht taking thirty-six photographs of his bathing towel on film.

Film - Analog source for saving or recording images. This method is quite old and requires numerous chemicals to achieve desired effect. Also takes much longer, and doesn't have all the tools digital photography has to offer.
