This is used to describe the area of a film used by a camera to record a photo. A 35mm format camera records a 24x36mm image on the film. Medium format cameras record anything from 6x4.5cm to 6x17cm on 120 and 220 roll film.

Film Format refers to the various dimensions of film used to take photographs. The characteristic that film format primarily describes is the size of the film and the type of camera that uses the given film.

A film format is a technical definition of a set of standard characteristics regarding the image capture of still film or the image capture and projection of motion picture film. In the latter case, it may also encompass audio parameters.

The 35mm film format was developed and produced at an experimental scale in Thomas A. Edison's laboratory in New Jersey by splitting 70mm roll film.
"Ideal" format - film format in the proportion of 4 to 3, e.g. 6 x 4.5cm. This ratio is considered the ideal shape by some manufacturers and many photographers for both vertical and horizontal composition.
LARGE FORMAT - Film format having individual frames of 4" X 5" or larger.
LATENT IMAGE - Image recorded on film that is made visible by development.
Formats & focal lengths: The focal length of a lens, wide-angle, standard, telephoto, depends on the film format. The term "standard" for example, is a lens that gives a normal looking perspective which is close to what human eye sees.

APS - Advanced Photo System - will probably be the last film format ever invented. It was released in 1996 by Kodak and a consortium of major manufacturers, including Fuji, Agfa, Konica, Nikon, Canon, Minolta and Pentax.

Large format
As the name implies this is the largest of modern film formats (the most popular being 5"x4" & 10"x8"), and they are especially suitable for high quality commercial work.

Without the mirror and prism, lens-shutter cameras can be much lighter and more compact than an SLR using the same film format.
An additional feature of using a land camera in a housing is that you can choose which film format you want to use. Housings are available for all formats from 110 to 6x7cm

The first major division is by format, or film size.

Standard lens
Lens with a focal length approximately equal to the diagonal of the film format with which it is used.
The former refers to traditional 35mm film camera format (also known as 135 format). In other words, '35mm film camera' refers to the 135 film format -- not the lens format. [35mm is the width of the film including the sprockets.] ...
No real surprise there since the APS format had the misfortune of appearing on the scene just about the time digital became practical and economical. Who needs a film format even smaller than 35mm?
