Filter thread
Most SLR cameras, some digital and a few compacts have a threaded ring at the front end of the lens. This is used to attach coloured and special effect filters as well as other accessories to alter the light that reaches the film.

Filters for Digital Cameras
With film cameras filters have traditionally been used to modify both the spectral content (color) and intensity of light, as well as generating special effects like soft focus.

FILTERS AND FILTER HOLDER SIZES
When we start in photography we either don't know enough, we don't have enough funds, or we are just beginning to get interested. Any of the above of course restricts our choices.

Macro Filters
Macro filters are magnifying glasses for your camera. They work surprisingly well, and can turn a non-macro camera into a competent macro camera. If your camera already does macro, the macro filters will let you get even closer.

Are Filters Still Needed for Digital?
Believing that most anything can be fixed later in Photoshop, it may be tempting to think you no longer need to use filters once you begin shooting digitally.

Lens Filters
A lens filter is a photographic tool that is placed over (either screwed or snapped onto) the camera's lens to alter the wavelengths of the light that enter the camera.

Star filters create pretty patterns from point-light sources, such as light bulbs, candles, or sparkles on water. Typically they come in four-, six-, and eight-point configurations.

Which Filter Should You Use?
Here are the different types of filters and their applications.

WHICH FILTER SYSTEM
Start investing in filters and there are many decisions to be made. The first is which filter type should you go for.

A few filter makers.
Lots of firms make filters. I own a few filters made by a few of them and have looked at others in shops. Here are my remarks, representing purely my small sample size.

Camera Filters Let You Go Beyond What the Human Eye Can See
Camera filters let you take photos of things that are there, but that you don’t necessarily see with the human eye.

How The Filter Works
In practice, circular polarizing filters are easy to use. They are available in a wide variety of diameters to fit most any modern lens and screw onto the thread at the end.

Filters are much underestimated, and these days since you can add them in Photoshop people don't bother with them altogether.

The filter would be arranged so that the dark part covers the sky, pulling down it's brightness to a capturable level. ND grads come in various arrangements, sharpnesses of gradation and strengths.

This filter needs to be used very carefully to achieve the best effect. Too much sharpening can make the picture look false.

Warming Filter
Despite their technological prowess Tiffen was reluctant to jump on the bandwagon when competitive filter makers started multi-coating their filters about 20 years ago.

Filters
Most camera lenses can accept a filter attachment. By attaching a sepia filter onto your lens, you can take images as usual and the negative will record the sepia toning.

FILTER SIZE - is determined by the inner diameter of the front of a lens, more specifically the threads into which a filter is screwed to attach it to the lens. A 62 mm filter screws onto a lens that has threads that have a diameter of 62 mm.

Filters - Can be plastic or glass attachments for the lens of the cameras. The effect the filter achieves differs depending on the filter used.
