Firmware

A digital camera's sensor, buffer, LCD, autofocus, etc. are controlled by a set of microprocessors which in turn are controlled by "firmware", which is software stored in the Read Only Memory (1) of the camera.
Once you have the card with the "A firmware" bin file on it in the camera, go to the Firmware Update option on the Setup menu. Underneath the display of your camera's current firmware version, you should find a "Version Up" option.

When you shoot RAW your camera's firmware has to set a white point, black point and midpoint to build the 'in camera' histogram for that image.
These are things like LCD brightness, language settings, firmware updating, etc. On the one hand, this is a pretty good idea. It's very quick to access and it keeps all of the camera's non-photography stuff out of the "menu" button list.
Probably the only reason not to house the Coolpix 5000, given the new firmware Version 1.
For another year early purchasers and upgraders of digital cameras were treated to a variety of firmware fixes, recalls, and in the case of the Nikon firmware upgrade, a recall of the upgrade.
Does Canon have any explanation, a planned fix, firmware update, anything? Everything else seems pretty much what I would expect. My G11 takes great pictures and I can get pretty close in micro setting.
Some early models of the EOS 3 had a firmware (internal computer program) bug which lead to the camera underexposing images by about 2/3 of a stop. Later models have revised firmware which fixes the problem.
What this is is that the built in memory controller is designed to work more efficiently with special firmware present in some digital cameras. Lexar claim speed gains of "up to 23%" in these cameras.

As others have said, you haven't answered the original question posed in the title of this article. Wasted my time reading it.

I tend to set the white balance manually as the auto WB is not always right, especially in tungsten situations.
The new firmware (1.0.0.2) changed the speed from 1/15 to 1/30 and forces the Auto WB when using the flash. This works really well.
As CPUs have become faster, more sophisticated noise reduction is able to be viably employed, allowing camera firmwares' software to correct for the technical deficiencies of increasingly noisy photographic sensors.
