Life of a Fixing Bath The useful life of a fixing bath depends on several factors. One of which is the amount of material treated in the fixing bath.
Fixing a pain in the astrophotography
Two large problems plague the astrophotographer. The worst problem, particularly for those who can't escape to really dark sky areas, is light-polluted skies.

Fixing agent. Chemical able to change silver halide into colorless soluble salts.
Flare. Scattered light that dilutes the image, lowering contrast and seeming to reduce sharpness. Mostly occurs when the subject is backlit.
Fixing: Chemical action following development to remove unexposed silver halides, to make the image stable and insensitive to further exposure.
-Acid fixing solutions - solutions which contain an acid to neutralize any carry-over of alkaline developer on the negative or print.
-Acid hardener - substance used in acid fixer to help harden the gelatin of the emulsion.
