Flash meter
A meter used to measure the light that is emitted from an electronic flashgun. The meter suggests what aperture should be used to obtain a correct exposure. Some meters are purely for flash others are multipurpose.

Electronic flash has come a long way since Harold "Doc" Edgerton, an American researcher and inventor, made modern electronic flash photography a reality in 1931.

Flash Metering
Only a handful of cameras, e.g., certain Rolleis and Contaxes, have been manufactured with the capability of metering flash exposure with a through-the-lens in-camera meter.

Flash meter
A device for measuring the light coming from a electronic flash and indicating the appropriate aperture for correct exposure. Some flash meter can also measure the ambient light.

Most current SLR flash systems employ some form of through-the-lens (TTL) metering.

TTL Flash Metering For Macro Photography
TTL (through the lens) flash metering setups for macro work are very nice. However, you must be careful not to exceed the minimum flash to subject distance allowed for TTL mode with the flash unit.

TTL flash metering
With TTL flash metering the flash light and ambient light is measured through the lens so the intensity of the flash can be set. All work is done by the camera so the flash does not need any metering cells or control circuits.

Flash meters are nice, but I don't use one. Just shoot at about f/16 in manual exposure mode at your lowest ISO, look at your LCD, and adjust the aperture (or lights) to taste.

Through The Lens. A term applied to viewfinders and metering systems that operate behind the lens. As such TTL is accurate because it sees what the lens sees.

Why get a dedicated flash meter when you can use a multi-function meter such as Sekonic's L-758DR (right)?

Exposure Value; A number that represents available combinations of shutter speed and aperture offering the same exposure effect when scene brightness remains the same.

This feature is very useful in situations where the camera's normal flash metering system might struggle to achieve a correct exposure.

Second, the color balance and improved flash metering on the Nikon D1X, D1H and the Canon 1D makes a large difference. It is such a joy to use these cameras when set to Adobe RGB--coupled with a computer monitor and printer also profiled.

A Sekonic L-758DR handheld flash meter was used to measure incident light for a base (normal) exposure. Images were shot first using this 'normal' exposure for ISO 100, 400 and 800, then -1 stop and +2 stops overexposed in half-stop increments.

If you have one, use a flash meter to measure the flash output of each light source. If you don’t, take test shots and judge the exposure from your camera’s LCD screen (even if you go on to shoot film). Modern DSLRs have great screens.

E-TTL (Evalulative-Through-The-Lens Metering) is a flash metering systems designed by Canon, in which the flash unit fires a pre-flash burst prior to the main flash firing in order to get a more accurate metering reading for a more correct exposure.

Flash meters are used in flash photography to verify correct exposure. Color meters are used where high fidelity in color reproduction is required. Densitometers are used in photographic reproduction.

E-TTL
E-TTL (Evaluative-Through The Lens) flash metering. A Canon EOS flash exposure system that uses a brief pre-flash before the main flash in order to obtain a more correct exposure.

Some spot meters, such as the Sekonic DualMaster and the Konica Minolta Flash Meter VI, record and display multiple meter readings and show the difference in exposure in increments as small as 1/3-EV values.
