Locking Flash Shoe Nikons for about 15 years have had a pin in the flash shoe which bolts the flash solidly into the hot shoe. It will never slide a little out and lose its electrical connection. It flicks with a lever.

A bubble level often tips you off to any tilting. Some tripods come equipped with a level; otherwise, an add-on accessory is available that slips onto the camera's flash shoe. But remember: Such a bubble is NOT foolproof (see next item).
It's completely manual and has a built in light meter (no batteries required). It even has a flash shoe and will sync up to 1/300th. Yeah... it's a little heavier than the modern P&S cameras... but if you need a backup camera...
Finally, I understand that Metz have acknowledged that none of their flash units with the SCA3102 adapter currently work correctly with the new EOS 300V/Rebel Ti/Kiss 5 camera, owing to changes in the design of the flash shoe electronics.
Some MILC cameras, to save space and weight, don't, but you may be able to buy an optical or electronic viewfinder as an optional add-on that slides into the flash shoe. I recommend spending the extra money to have this camera-steadying option.
