A technique used by advanced printers to lower contrast by giving a brief exposure to the sheet of printing paper either before or after the image has been exposed to it.

If you see the flashing or blinking borders when you preview every photo, chances are, the highlight mode was the last information screen you looked at.

Flashing Film
Exposing film to low levels of even illumination primarily to decrease Contrast; controlled Fogging.

One section of a Set traditionally made of canvas stretched over a wood frame.

-Flashing - briefly and evenly exposing photographic materials to white light.Often used to lower contrast of printing paper, when the flashing exposure is made in addition to the regular exposure.

Flashing
Pre-exposing the paper to a very diffused white light in order to reduce the contrast level between the highlights and shadows and extend the tonal range.

Flashing is generally accomplished by giving the paper a weak diffuse exposure before, during or after the printing.

hi, great article! but where are the example photos referred to in the text?

You take a test shot and notice the blinkies are flashing so you dial in some minus compensation. The needed amount to get the histogram to look right winds up to be minus a full stop. Your shoot lasts for just about an hour.

What if the camera's aperture display is flashing "f/2.8" and the preview pictures are too dark? It is probably late in the afternoon on a cloudy day and the lens won't open up wide enough to admit sufficient light at the short shutter speed.

Low contrast originals won't need flashing, but high contrast images will be produced too contrasty unless you fog the film to some degree. Slide duplicators are the most expensive method of getting duplicates.

Fast films are hypersensitised either chemically or by flashing a bright light of known intensity for a brief known period to just below the threshold i.e. not quite enough to produce a latent image.
