Focus Priority
On Nikons with the ability to set this, set the AF-C Focus Priority to "Focus Priority." It's in the menus.
The default is "Release Priority." The D70 and D50 only work in this mode.

Focus priority mode
If your camera has continuous focus mode, also called servo-focus mode, that means the camera will continuously focus, and allow you to release the shutter at any time.

Focus priority (trap focus). Auto-focus camera mode by which you cannot release the shutter until the lens has sharply focused your subject.
Focusing. Changing the lens-to-image (or lens-to-subject) distance, until a sharp image is formed.

This may sound like a good thing, but many wildlife and sports photographers use continuous servo autofocus priority for the following reason - the camera will constantly update the focus after it's been acquired if you hold the shutter button ...

Cameras which offer C-AF will also offer some type of focus priority feature. This prevents the exposure from being made unless the camera has gotten sharp focus. This feature can usually be turned on or off.

If you use Single Focus Priority, the shutter will not fire unless the camera confirms the subject is in focus. This prevents the possibility of having the lens catch up with the action.
