With larger subjects, minimum focusing distance isn't usually an issue. But when dealing with flowers the instinct of the photographer is to move as close as possible in order to fill the frame with the flower.

If your lens has a depth of field scale, set the focusing mark on the lens to the distance indicated below the f/stop selected. Do not re-focus the lens once the hyper-focal distance is set. It will be out of focus.

Zone Focusing: A type of focusing system that has two or more focus settings for varying subject distance ranges, rather than a continuously adjustable focusing ring.

Macro Focusing
Since DOF is so small, it's usually a good idea to use manual focusing for 1x macro shots so you get the DOF exactly where you want it.

Macro Focusing Often refers to the capability of certain zoom lenses in which the lens group moves, enabling the lens to focus closer than the normal close-up focusing distance.
