Format
Format (noun) is used to describe the area of a film used by a camera to record a photo or the way a digital file is saved (see film format).

Film format
This is used to describe the area of a film used by a camera to record a photo. A 35mm format camera records a 24x36mm image on the film. Medium format cameras record anything from 6x4.5cm to 6x17cm on 120 and 220 roll film.

Video formats

Large format means film that is generally at least 4x5 inches (or 9x12 cm). Film this size is generally used as individual sheets, rather than rolls as in smaller formats.

GLOSSARY: JPEG (File Format)
JPEG, standing for Joint Photographic Experts Group, is a widely used, compressed image format. This is the standard file format that virtually all digital cameras produce by default.

When I started using large format, the hurdle of successfully loading film holders loomed large in my mind. This seems to be the case for other people, too, although in reality, loading holders is so simple, it's not worth a moment's worry.

FORMATTING - In a digital camera, formatting refers to the preparation of the memory card's contents to enable digital image data recording. Also known as initializing.

File format
In film photography photos are recorded onto light sensitive film. This is developed with special chemicals and a negative is produced. In digital photography photos are stored as a digital file.
