First, all pictures should be matted. This is to separate the photograph from the glass. If this is not done, the emulsion of the photograph will stick to the glass.

FRAMING Framing is another technique photographers use to direct the viewer's attention to the primary subject of a picture. Positioned around the subject, a tree, an archway, or even people, for example, can create a frame within the picture area.

Natural framing is a photography technique where items being photographed are used as internal frames. These photographed frames can be natural such as trees, vines, or caves. They can also be man made such as doorways or actual picture frames.

What are some framing guidelines?
First, choose your focal point (it can be a puppy, a building, etc.) Even landscape shots that have endless details should have a focal point - a meandering river, a rock face.

Framing
Framing is a photographic composition technique used to enhance the overall result of a photo and to draw attention to the subject. Framing does not refer to physical frames you put your photos into.

Framing the subject
The first choice in deciding how to frame the subject in the viewfinder is to decide whether you want a horizontal or vertical composition. In a previous article we discussed the merits of both.

The vast majority of snapshots can be dramatically enhanced simply by cropping them to strengthen their composition.

Framing an artwork, as you may have learned already, places more emphasis on your work and gives it a sense of greatness, completeness, realness and importance. It is a good idea for you to keep this effect intact.

Framing is important, too, especially when you want to give texture a leading role. By moving in close to an old, weathered face, either physically or with a long lens, you focus the viewer's attention on the wrinkles and crevices.

Framing can also be done after the fact by combining two or more pictures in an image editing software. Very dramatic effects can be accomplished this way and you are only limited by your imagination.

Framing has almost nothing to do with composition, but sadly, few photographers realize this. Framing can't do much of anything to change the relationships between objects.

His framing technique is made cool with lens selection-a Sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye. By placing slightly curved lines at the edges of his frames and then shooting with a fisheye, Chin emphatically bows out the lines, adding a dynamic energy and sweep.

When framing the photo, place these extras near the bottom of the frame - remember, they're just there to lead the eye into the photo, they're not the main subject.
Tips and tricks ...

When framing through the viewfinder, try not to lose touch with your surroundings.

After re-framing the shot for a slightly lower perspective, I took another exposure at the same camera settings.
Notice how there is no surface reflection in the base of the teapot? First problem solved! ...

Check the framing occasionally to make sure you aren't missing the fireworks. Repeat until all film is gone. Oh, no magic camera required, it works like a hose.

Selective Framing: A very common practice is for a photographer to frame an image in such a way as to intentionally exclude items from the image (e.g. a telephone pole or soft drink can). This is just part of good composition.

In terms of FRAMING night-time lightning strikes, it is essential to capture the entire vertical path of the strike. From the cloud to the ground (or ocean/lake/river), you must get the entire strike. Be careful with use of zoom in this instance.

Black and white photos emphasize the play of light and shadows without the distraction of color. This is both a strength and weakness for black and white photos.

Less than perfect framing (FOV) aside. I think it is fairly easy to see that with the same FOV and same output resolution pixel density doesn't really effect the amount of detail in the two 8mp camera images.

When framing valuable prints use acid free or pH-neutral backing paper and mats.
Store 35mm negatives in archival sleeves - the cheap drugstore plastic sleeves are probably not archival. Buy higher-quality sleeves from professional photo stores.

It is not very accurate in framing the scene as it doesn't look straight through the lens and is mostly slightly offset both horizontally and vertically. It only shows about 80% to 90% of the actual image.

That's because you usually don't compose your shot for a certain magnification but for a certain framing. For example, you try to fill the frame with some object.

The advantage of using a reflex viewfinder is that a better impression of the framing, focus and depth-of-field can be gained.

With any lens your primary tool for framing your shot should be your feet, not your lens. Only by changing position can you truly change your perspective. This much can be done with both primes and zooms.

Your spotter can watch for the skier while you focus on framing the shot. Then, when your spotter calls out to you, you can react before you even see the skier yourself.

I wanted to make larger prints for matting and framing and longevity was certainly a concern. My choice was the Epson 2200, a model that is very popular amongst serious photographers. Maximum paper size is 13 x 19 inches.

The same applies for framing your subject in your picture. Walk around the subject, try out different points of view and see how it works from all possible angles, such as the frontal view, bird's-eye view and the view from below.

However many of these LCD monitors on the low-end digital camera are only postage "stamp" size and framing and viewing on this size is very different from viewing through the bright and big optical viewfinder of some 35mm film cameras.

It's very easy to get into a routine of using the same framing and focal length of your lenses to take good shots. Photographers often find a 'sweet spot' and stick to it when they're taking portrait photos.
