Full Manual Exposure

In this mode you select the aperture and the shutter speed (and additionally Bulb shutter). Again by default the front dial controls shutter speed, but this can be changed using the custom menu.

 


Is full manual mode important in a compact camera?

In full Manual shooting mode, the photographer has full control over all the settings of the camera. This provides the most exposure flexibility and allows for creative photography.

Via an LCD panel and push button controls on the rear, full manual control is possible. The head can be zoomed to 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm, 80mm and 105mm.

Most cameras have a way of doing this that doesn't mean that you have to go into a full manual mode - in fact my point and shoot digital camera allows me to force the flash to fire IN automatic mode.

Shoot on full manual exposure control and use your light meter, if equipped. You are trying to purposely UNDERexpose your sunrise or sunset images. This will deepen the colors you are aiming to portray.

For more advanced users, the PowerShot SX40 HS offers the complete flexibility of full manual control.

In aperture priority the camera will then automatically select the right shutter speed but in full manual, you will have to decide the right shutter speed for a correct exposure of the scene.

Any digital SLR camera will give you full manual control from focus to shutter speed to aperture. Higher-end digital SLR cameras allow even greater manual control, including variable ISO speeds and selective focus that increases the depth of field.

You need a body which allows full manual override of any automatic function. You must be able to use manual focus, even if it's an autofocus camera.

These Nikon digital cameras offer full manual modes, manual focus, various shutter speeds, white balance, aperture priority etc.

One of the very clever new features of the Tetra 5000 is the ROC strobe controller to fire the camera either as digital TTL strobe, manual exposure bracketing based on TTL feedback, or full manual strobe values.

High-end Canon flash units can also work in full manual mode, which lets you set the flash output by hand rather than relying on an automated system like TTL or E-TTL.

The other way to control for aperture is to use the full manual setting usually labeled "M".

The main selling points of the GR Digital are the compact body, full manual controls, 28mm GR lens, and its excellent image quality.

If it is possible turn your camera onto a full manual setting so the aperture and shutter speed remain constant throughout the time lapse (this is the M setting on most SLRs). In addition keep the focus on manual and the ISO fixed.

If you're shooting in full manual you really have to keep an eye on the results and continually make adjustments.

It’s true that you can make great High Dynamic Range Images with almost any camera with full manual controls, but a wide and fast bracket sequence makes it so much easier. These cameras are at the top of the heap for serious HDR photographers.

If your camera cannot meter in stop down mode, you'll have to use a light meter and factor in exposure compensation for the distance of the lens extension and use the camera in full manual exposure mode.

You can use either aperture-priority automatic mode (where you set the aperture, and the camera chooses the shutter speed), or in full manual mode, where you set both the shutter speed and the aperture.

As an absolute minimum, make sure that the camera gives you access to the three important exposure modes: aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual. Also, some P&S cameras have a "hot shoe" to which you attach an external flash.

So, read your camera's manual, figure out exposure compensation, shutter priority, aperture priority, ISO setting and get going. We'll go into full manual mode and more on these other controls in future articles.

In Auto mode, the camera determines shutter speed for itself, but cameras with Shutter Priority mode can set the speed manually. In full Manual mode, both the shutter speed and aperture can be set at the same time.

Of lesser importance until you are comfortable photographing underwater are more high-end features such as RAW and full manual controls. Trying too much too soon can be dangerous.

Buying advice: Autofocus is essential if you want to use the camera effortlessly, but occasionally the system is fooled, so make sure the camera has a focus lock or infinity setting or, better still, full manual control.
