A Ghost In The Photo?
"My family and my parents were camping at the Lower Sabie Camp in the Kruger National Park. There, at about 8pm, my mother took the attached photo, using automatic focus and the ‘night time' setting on her camera.

The final collection of images- and ghost stories-has been published in Haunted Houses (2010, Monacelli Press).

This could also be used in a more controlled environment with a focus on producing ghostlike, see-through people. Also, a common problem many people run into when shooting with a flash is that the subject ends up surrounded by darkness.

GHOST IMAGE - In time exposure photography, an object that is only partially recorded on the film and therefore has a translucent, ghost-like appearance.

X-ray, or radiographic, photography has been around most of a century. However, due to cost and access to equipment, there are very few photographers in the world capable of creating these images.

Ghosting
There was a lot of discussion when the A55 was released of an issue known as 'ghosting'. This was evident in early SLT cameras, and took the form of faint 'ghost' images of bright highlights in some images.

Ghosting
A camera lens is a combination of several lenses. Ghosting is caused by the stray reflections inside the lens of strong light sources like direct sunlight. It occurs as the result of taking pictures against backlight (or semi-backlight).

-Ghost images - bright spots of light, often taking the shape of the aperture, which appear in the camera viewfinder or in the final photograph when a lens is pointed at a bright light like the sun.

Ghost images or images of the diaphragm have much more to do with the design of the lens than with coatings, although coating will reduce the effect when it is present. I have several old, uncoated lenses which do not produce ghost images.

HALATION -A halo or ghost image surrounding the true image of a bright object on a photographic emulsion, caused by reflection of rays of light from the back of the negative material.

Using high speed flash for my background coverage and 1/200 of a second for my shutter speed eliminates the possibility of ghost images. All of this can be accomplished with TTL flash metering for all three flash units.

In the early days of computing, if you left a monitor on for a long time a ghostly image of whatever was on the screen would be burned into it. Even when the monitor was off, you could still see the image burned into the screen's phosphor.

Next, it is ideal to use a tripod to shoot your multiple exposures because you don't want your hand to move the camera significantly between successive exposures, or there will be "ghosts" created in the final HDR image.

If you notice foggy or ghostly images or total black out, it was the result of X-ray. Best protection is hand inspection. In US and Canada, you have the right to request for hand inspection.

There are other alternatives such as Norton Ghost (Ghost - Casper, see the connection...). I like Casper XP. It clones my primary drive to an external Firewire drive at a speed of around 1.

When scale focusing became my Nemesis, I dumped the submersible for a housed SLR system that lasted me until the camera gave the ghost (I still have the widowed housing, the camera is no longer made, they are *dedicated*, you know).

Flare and ghosting can be issues shooting into the light, resulting in lower contrast images.

Dark, non-reflective clothes will help avoid âEËœghosting,âEâ"¢ your see-thru after-image that appears if you walk in from of the camera during exposure. This is only a concern in scenes with some ambient light.
Film speed.

Clear or "UV" filters are good for protecting lenses, but uncoated ones can cause horrible ghosting and flare spots.

Ghost Image or Ghosting A double image that results from using flash in relatively bright light at a low shutter speed. The two images, one from the ambient light and a second from the flash, do not perfectly coincide.

This simple image of an old railroad car in a ghost town doesn't look like it would present any particular problems. However, a 100% crop of the sharpened image (see Figure 3) shows a major sharpening challenge.

There, the frogfish, seahorse, ghostpipefish, scorpionfish, filefish and other hirsute species are easily found.

When you look through the viewfinder at a bright object you'll see two dim ghost images. Adjust the focus until the images overlap, then remove the cardboard. You'll probably need to experiment with hole size and placement for this to work well.

During the 1/3 of a second that the exposure took place, you see both parts of the scene, without the train (see how the palm trees appear ghost-like through the train) and then with the train.

Lens hood
A short conical shaped tube that attaches to the front of a lens to shield it from extraneous light. Helps prevent lens flare, ghost images and loss of contrast. An inexpensive must have accessory for your camera system.

Many ruined photos are blamed on focus, when if fact the real culprit is usually camera shake. Here is how you can tell the difference: If you seeing ghost "doubles" on the image, you can be sure the problem is camera-shake.

You don't want the incoming light to shine directly into your lens producing ghostlike blobs.

Used with digital imaging, low-pass filters are integrated into many digital sensors to suppress color ghosting and the effects of infra-red light.

As such, any internal reflections in the lens can create ghosting and other artifacts if not sufficiently controlled. To help do so, lenses designed for digital tend to have improved coatings on their elements.
