A universal type of image file for use on the Web. A Gif contains only 256 colours so it's best used for solid colour graphics such as logos and buttons, rather than high quality photographic images.

Developed as a patent-free alternative to GIF, the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format is used for losslessly compressing and displaying images on the World Wide Web.
The JPEG format does far better at retaining color fidelity than does GIF. For continuous-tone images such as photos, JPEG's can also be a lot smaller than GIF's due to the way the data is stored.
I got lucky with the sorting of the GIF title cards because "GIF" comes before "JPG" in alphabetical order. So title cards with the same name as a JPG file appear before the associated image when sorted by name.
