Gigabyte (GB) - A gigabyte is roughly one billion bytes of a computer memory. It's sufficient to store around 500 high-quality JPEG photos from a typical 8-megapixel camera.
By now, you probably have at least a few gigabytes of digital photos on your hard drive. That is a lot to keep track of, and if you don't manage them somehow, you'll end up losing all of your favorites.

Portable Storage Devices
Portable storage devices store photos outside of the photographer's computer. They can store up to one hundred gigabytes of images.
PSB - The .PSB (Photoshop Big) format is an updated version of .PSD specifically designed for dealing with files over 2 gigabytes in size.
In the File Handling Preferences, pay attention to Camera Raw Cache Settings. In order to increase Lightroom performance set the value for Maximum Size to 10 or more gigabytes (if you have the free space).
It is cheaper to buy a one gigabyte stick than two 512MBs.
Buy plenty of memory. It's cheap. Don't buy a small amount and resort to deleting pictures of the camera to make room. Furthermore, deleting pictures can corrupt the card.

Images are backed up again when the gallery is finished and online. After backing up, I always run through the images and make sure that the images come up in Photomechanic and also confirm the total number of gigabytes in each folder.
It doesn't have information in it for every possible color since this would make the profile file well over one gigabyte in size, but it does have information on enough significant points that the CMS can interpolate the rest.
Dan Steinhardt at Epson specifically asked for a final file that was unflattened, 16-bit, Pro Photo RGB-captured to the highest resolution possible. Using a Sinarback 54HR, P2, the final size after retouching would be in the gigabytes.
For instance, when I go out on a multi-day shoot, I come back with several gigabytes of images. Once uploaded to the computer, I start the conversion. Then, I unload my gear, take a shower, or eat some dinner.
