With glossy papers it's easy to tell the printable surface (the shiny side) but for others it can be more difficult. Usually the printable side looks smoother when held at an angle to the light or whiter when flipped back and forth.

When you have gone through all the trouble of capturing an image on camera, the most satisfying moment is when you are holding a nicely finished print on glossy paper.

Glossy paper surfaces provide more "apparent" range than matte types, in terms of both highlights and shadows, but that's mostly an optical illusion. Also, lot depends on the ink being used.

My opinion is that luster paper doesn't minimize gloss differential very much, if at all, it just shows it differently than glossy papers. Both luster and semi-gloss papers are stippled (textured with very tiny dimples).

The sum of the contrast of these three regions defines the global contrast. This means if you spend more contrast on the mid-tones (very common) you can spend less global contrast on highlights/shadows at any given global contrast (e.g. glossy paper ...

Glossy paper may be used in cameras with flat image planes, where light will not be reflected. Some photographers use Ilfochrome paper with great success.

One advantage of pigment prints is that many types of printing substrates are available, ranging from sheets of aluminum to watercolor-like art papers to luster and glossy papers.
