Gradient
A colour or grey tone fill that gradually changes in density across the selected area. Some programs refer to it as a graduated fill and several patterns can be applied to vary the direction or style of gradation.

Gradients can be extraordinarily flexible. You can alter the characteristics of a gradient by checking the Edit button under the gradient Options palette. If you don't get precisely the effect you're looking for, you can try again.

gradient fill
An elaboration on a fill color consisting of two colors placed at opposite ends of a closed area of an image element. The area is filled with a continuous blend of color intermediate to the two colors and between the two ends.

Select GRADIENT TOOL from the tools palette on the upper left. The Grad tool is halfway down the right side of the tools pallet and is shared with the Paint Bucket Tool. You might have to click and hold the Paint Bucket to get the grad tool.

Continuous toneA continuous tone results when a stock photo has not been screened and contains gradient tones from highlight to shadow. The original can be either black and white or colour and contain no dots.

The sky takes on a cobalt blue color with a gradient like effect. The top of the gradient is dark and the bottom is light. The sky has yet to go black creating separation between it and the subject.

Sunsets and sunrises over water often benefit from softer gradients, for example.

The JPEG process is a 'lossy' one, meaning that some data is removed, and color gradients are simplified, which may result in some image degradation based on the amount of compression you choose.

Banding
A visible stepping of shades in a gradient. A artifact of colour gradation in computer imaging, when graduated colours break into larger blocks of a single colour, reducing the smooth look of a proper gradation.

The scale is identical to ASA (American Standards Association) where the rating is based on an arithmetical progression, using an average gradient system. Therefore ISO 200 film is twice as fast as ISO 100 film but only half as fast as ISO 400 film.

reproduce 256 differentiations of tone from white to black. If we break down the tonal range into fewer differentiations you begin to see the breaks between the individual tones. We call this posterization, it often appears in smooth color gradients.

This banding occurs when there aren't enough tonal values to display continuous tonality. Where you should see a smooth gradient, a rough jump in color or a band may appear. Evidence of the lack of tonality can be seen in the image's histogram.

However if you can clearly separate between certain areas of the image (e.g. top with bright leafs and bottom with lots of shadows) you might get away with simply stacking two images and drawing a gradient on your layer mask to blend from one image ...
