Graduated Filter, Grad
A filter with modulated-color or gray areas which can be oriented in front of the camera to control Contrast or add color to part of a scene. Also see: Attenuator.

-Graduated filter - filter with a colored section, which gradually reduces in density toward the center of the filter. The rest of the filter is clear. Also referred to as a Graduated filter
-Gradation - tonal contrast range of an image.

Graduated filters come in strengths of one, two, or three stops with transitions either soft-edged or hard-edged.

Graduated filters are useful for keeping detail in the sky and clouds.
Red filters will darken the sky, creating a moody atmosphere.

Graduated Filter - A filter than contains a clear portion combined with an increasingly dense or colored portion. It allows a photographer to adjust a photo area's color or exposure level.

Graduated filters of a given width (100 mm, 67 mm, 84 mm, etc.) are often made rectangular, rather than square, in order to allow the position of the gradation to be moved up or down in the picture.

ND-graduated filters are half clear and half tinted. They are used to reduce exposure in part of the frame in scenes when exposure range of the subject is too much for the film to handle.

The Graduated Filter control acts like a graduated filter used over your lens, but it includes more controls.

The graduated filter creates linear gradients that are applied in a straight line. The graduated filter smoothly transitions from full effect to no effect. The strength of the adjustment at the start of the gradient is 100%, and at the end is 0%.

For graduated filters you may want to hold them over the camera's viewfinder to get a better idea of the effect. Avoid doing this with conventional linear polarizers since many rangefinder viewfinders may go black depending on the angle of rotation.

To use graduated filters takes a little care. You must remember to take your camera meter reading off the land before you install the grey grad. That way the land will expose as required and the filter will not effect the reading.

With the graduated filter tool selected, to create a graduated filter effect, simply click at the top of your image and drag down.

Where to Place The Graduated Filter: A graduated neutral density filter adds density to a bright sky or foreground. A graduated color filter adds both color and density.

A graduated filter will help, but there is little you can do. It’s better to let the sun ‘cool off’ and to try a different aspect or composition. Sub-zero temperatures can have a significant effect on the performance of batteries.

Digital correction with gradient mask techniques replaces and surpasses using traditional graduated filters.

Neutral density graduated filters are the most common types, but there are also coloured versions available - gradient sunset filters, for instance, or tobacco-coloured ones.

Cokin's P holder is useful as a standard filter holder compatible with wide-angle lenses (particularly if you saw off the outer two slots), though many people eschew Cokin's "grey" graduated filters as they aren't true neutral density filters and ...

Prints from the original TIF file do show some detail in the fallen tree in the foreground (viewing the slide projected on a screen shows even more) but I think it works well as a silhouette, even here. A graduated filter might have helped capture ...

The best systems have a choice of holders to accomodate a various number and/or thickness of filters .
A choice of rectangular filters. The rectangular shape allows the filter to be adjusted in height (critical for graduated filters), ...

If your subject is small enough to illuminate, think about using an off camera speedlight first or adding a graduated filter. If that doesn't solve your exposure issues, time to suck it up and put together an HDR.
